Hexagram 59 changing to 58 Relationship question

Hi,

Although I just recently joined this site, I became acquainted with the I Ching many years ago through my uncle. Lately, I have been going back to the I Ching, as I am experiencing all sorts of transformations and looking for some guidance...The question I posed relates to a very special guy I met over the summer. We both felt drawn towards each other, spiritually and sexually. But we live in different countries, I am older than him, and we only communicate via email. I asked the I Ching what does the future hold for our "relationship", and got 59 (1, 4, 6) changing to 58.

So here is my interpretation: 59 is about dissolving, and it seems to me this is exactly what has happened: there is an actual, physical separation between the two of us. Plus, he is a very busy person (for work reasons) and spends most of the time on the road. Line 1 refers to a horse (??), could this be interpreted as a trip? (we have talked about me visiting him in the next few months); line 4 refers to dissolving the group and making space (are we already there?), which may seem as a loss, but really signals the beginning of something new (a new type of relationship?); and line 6 talks about "scattering one's blood" and "leaving far away" (again, the distance theme).

Changing to 58: Exchange. As I said, I believe I have a strong spiritual connection with this person, and this is actually the aspect I care about most. Even if we had no future as a couple, I would like to keep in touch with him. Is this telling me I will merely be friends with him?

Any advice or input will be greatly appreciated.

Just a thought here, as hexagram fifty nine is often a tough one for me... First, dissolution often leads to union. In other words, something has to break apart before something else comes together. Two items that do not belong together are together, and that creates a problem in bringing the right person into one's life.

Now, there are two yin lines and one yang. The first line is far away from the sixth, and the fourth is much closer. The first thing to do here, I think, is be sure, if you can, that there is not someone in his life right now that needs to leave his life before you can enter in. I suspect, but cannot confirm, that there is someone in his life that is close, that he cannot easily break away from. But if he does, there is some possibility for you. Line six says "he dissolves his blood." Which makes me suspect someone that is part of a family unit perhaps. The fourth line, the middle line in this reading says, "He dissolves his bond with his group. Supreme good fortune. Dispersion leads in turn to accumulation." This is the key that I think breaks him up with the fourth line, (the person who is close) and leads him to the first line, the person far away.

This is my take on it, and I sure would be curious to know how it actually comes out.

Hi Gene,

WOW. I think you absolutely nailed it: he did mention a recent breakup with a long-time girlfriend, and I feel he is still struggling for closure. I am fascinated by your interpretation of the hexagrams, as I read several explanations of both 59 and 58 and did not see anywhere a person standing in between. (Please, forgive my English, I am not a native speaker.) I have so much to learn!

While 59 speaks to the difficulties mentioned above, the hex 58 speaks to the very real pleasure you experience in emailing back and forth with this man. He gives you opportunities to fully express yourself. A rare pleasure!

Hello Adah

As far as any such explanation of someone standing in between, you won't find it in standard explanations. Some people do not believe in reading the lines this way, but I have found that multiple lines often refer to multiple people or situations, and sometimes it is just a matter of seeing where your intuition leads you, and understanding the relationships between the lines. The Wilhelm/Bayes version does give some limited information on correspondences of the lines, but it doesn't go very far.

Just a brief update on this particular reading. Our correspondence slowly faded away, and we email each other on occasion. Thanks for your help!
