I see the line as being given bad advice on something or a warning that the wrong person is in charge it also seems to have the mob rules type scenario. I agree its hard to interperet , it would depend alot on the context of the question I think.
I would be interested myself to see what others who are more familiar with the ancient chines texts
Personally i have never cast this line.

more seriously ...though I have seen it numerous times around serious incompetence...it can also be just carrying dead wood, crap you don't need, old ideas or habits that need burying ?

Liberally: lose the baggage before attempting to undertake anything requiring resources. That could be emotional baggage, mind occupying baggage, baggage projected from without, dead end jobs or relationships, etc. Can't fight battles when you're too emotional over your losses either.

xyeli, you didn't say what your question was ...

In an organization, it could indicate that the leader is elderly or his/her ideas are outmoded. Perhaps the leader has become mentally disorganized due to age.

In collective action, in a municipal emergency for example, it could signify that many different departments all think they are in charge of handling the emergency situation. All these 'in charge' people act in a completely incompetent way. They are uncoordinated and ineffective.

In the migraine headache example above, the trouble could be in the lower back or any of the organs under the waistline. Spleen or kidneys? Food stagnating in the large intestine? Inflammation of the pancreas? Hex 7 comes up in acute and painful ailments, so a migraine headache is a good example of it.

If you look at hexagram 7 as a picture, it is showing water under the earth. I once asked if a certain place in the desert had enough water and I received 7uc. Yi was saying that at that location, there is water under the ground: Plenty of water.

7 in general means underground water or water under the earth. "Water" in the I Ching has certain meanings of peril, and I guess that was because the Chinese were an inland people. So there are these ideas of peril and hazard and danger and fear.

But in the case of an actual army, the soldiers conquer the emotion of fear due to the command of a strong general. The strong general is line 2. In the military, one is supposed to obey the general. That is another meaning of Earth: obedience and letting others lead.

Line 3 moving implies that someone "over" the lower position of the general has taken over the command but is not fit to lead. This is incompetent people interfering with the ability of the general to lead.

The implication could also be as Soooo said, to rid oneself of decrepit ideas or a belief system that is out-of-date and weighing you down. All this old stuff, weighing you down, impeding your ability to act as the general in charge of your own life.

Thanks Ginnie...

You know i cant remember what the question was...i should really get in the habit of keeping a journal for the i ching...! But I think it was probably something to do with my social group, I have gotten a number of hexagrams describing social hierarchy systems to me, how they can grow stagnant especially if the group is cliquey...

I think that particular week I was asking the I ching about what i consider is a bunch of slighty older friends who are trying to maintain the status quo in my bigger group of friends, they're quite exclusive and consider themselves 'the head honchos'-- I recently got 'close' with them (rather i am in a position of power to a certian extent because of the hobby that we all share- ) so they accepted me on the 'facade' of what they thought i was like and i soon saw that the ape mind of exclusion was rife amongst them...noticed how they would slander others to make themselves feel better...

I think this was part of that answer, Thanks for your reply. :)

I just got this line for my weekly reading i do on sunday nights when things are peaceful, I simply asked what do i need know about hitting my targets this week, hex 7.2.3.>15
Where i am with everything line 2 makes plenty of sense I think its basicaly very good organisation and hex 3 with the background of the way things are , i am leaning toward as Soooo is stating, the old way of doing things, i think thats what the line could mean in general however it could be more specific quite easily in another context.

Hi Steve,

Going back to the old way wasn't my intended meaning. Just dropping the dead weight or old baggage, like when we face death, we don't want to drag our bodies along with our spirit.

But what caught my attention in this new post was your mention of hitting your targets, which coalesces with a military marksman, and 15 can address the importance of breath control, body muscle control: the right about of tension in the right places, the right amount of relaxation in the right places, all which aid in hitting your target.
