Today the house I'm renting went actively on the market and I have to admit, I felt just a bit of utter panic. There are so few places in this part of the world to live and even fewer that are for rent and decent accomodation.

So I asked the Yi: "What is the outlook for a new home for me?" The casting: Hex 44.2.4 changing to Hex 53. If I'm not mistake, this is looking rather bleak.

The last reading we did for this there was a miracle in the offing in relation to this issue. Now it looks like I may NEED a miracle. I take this reading to mean that there aren't any houses out there. But then, if that's so, what is the significance of Hex 53 as the outcome?

As Hex 44 is about the most difficult hexagram to read, the possibilities aren't exactly clear. Maybe, become a harlot and somebody will give you a place to live?

[I thought Hex 53 was more about gradual courtship than wild promiscuousness.]

At any rate, it seems a strange reading in relation to the question.

You might also consider that you won't have to move at all, because the house won't get sold. If the house is the maiden, then perhaps it is so hurt that it can't get sold. At the same time, if this gua is speaking to your ability to move, then it does look a bit bleak. The two moving lines which refer to fish basically mean that you can't give what you don't have and what you have is fine for yourself, but wouldn't be good enough to give to guests. (If you want to become a harlot, you might consider that the gua might be warning that you aren't someone men ought to meet.) If, however, the maiden refers to the house, then, of course, she eventually marries someone, i.e., is sold. If the maiden refers to you, then eventually you will marry, i.e., find a place to live.

As this all means a lot of business, my sense is that this affair is going to take a lot of time, which make gradual progress for you no matter what. Of course, one might also say that this gua is favorable if you want to go out meet someone, ahem, but don't expect the whole affair to be sincere. The whole problem is like complicated sexual relations. That means there are a lot of complications until this house is sold.

Also, if you need help, find the help of women. This gua really is a woman's gua. Of course, I am assuming that the owner of the house is a woman as well.

Good luck.

What is the outlook for a new home for me?
(Does the powerful woman find a home?)
44.2.4 > 53

☰ ☴
☴ ☶

Auspices are favorable. From the hexagram pictures, hex 44 represents, as well as a powerful woman and a fish, a court document (inscribed plastron). In this case, a contract, and that is follow by hex 53, moving in like a bride moving to a new home. Your new home is in the lower right.

44J
Coming to Meet. The maiden is powerful.
One should not marry such a maiden.

You know prices and how to haggle.

44I
Thus does the prince act when disseminating his commands
And proclaiming them to the four quarters of heaven.

That is, he writes them down, and you have writing skills.

44.2
There is a fish in the tank. No blame.
Does not further guests.

Contract obtained. Whincup: "He should not surrender" for "Does not further guests". Bradford thinks the guests don't get the fish. Maybe 'guests' here means competitive bidders.

44.4
No fish in the tank.
This leads to misfortune.

Have a lawyer examine your contract.

53J
Development. The maiden
Is given in marriage.
Good fortune.
Perseverance furthers.

She moves to a new home.

Rosada kindly pointed out that I made a mistake in quoting 44.2, and I have corrected it. But this is an opportunity to add a metaphysical dimension, the idea that outer symbolizes inner. Haven't you entered the empty nest phase of life? A transition to a new home is part of your psychological growth. You will be giving up part of the past for a future with greater freedom.

Hi there,

The first thing that comes to mind is this:

In 44, a yin line representing something negative suddenly appears at the bottom. This mirrors your situation - you said your house just officially went for rent. It is as if a source of negativity just infected you. This is what line two warns against. Maintain a positive outlook! Rather than focus on the lack of places to rent, find a way to begin a new routine in which you optimistically search for the right new place for you. This will keep you motivated and lead you to the right place at the right time. Make it a game. Make it a challenge, but keep away from negativity, stagnation, avoidance, pessimism.

Line 4 warns against remaining aloof and uninvolved, leading to lack of resources when they are eventually needed. In order to heed this warning, try to be resourceful and perhaps make your new quest more public and involve friends or connections.

The final hexagram, 53, simply reinforces your goal and success, because the inner trigram of 53 is Ken, which symbolizes a house, and the outer trigram Sun represents a penetrative force, such as putting down roots. Another dimension of your hunt for a rental may end up mirroring this 53 hexagram, through its suggestion that over the course of time, the birds finally find their appropriate nesting place, but only after a series of attempts.

Best of luck!

So I asked the Yi: "What is the outlook for a new home for me?" The casting: Hex 44.2.4 changing to Hex 53.

Hex 53 indicates developments on the house hunting front, it says don't worry as you will find a home sooner or later.

So two possibilities will present themselves, the possibility of staying where you are or you utilize all your contacts with the locals and they will help you find a place in the area. But option two needs that you put yourself about and chat.

I've read the online listing of this house now and one interesting thing is that the facts of the property aren't spelled out, And there was a home inspection done recently, quite a disappointing one in fact that turned up loads of issues a buyer will have to solve. But those aren't mentioned at all and the house report isn't offered for the buyer to see -- which is unusual. The whole business of how the house is presented is strange. BUT the photos are gorgeous because I've done a lot of fixing and redecorating and what is here looks lovely. It's deceptive to see the surface and have no idea what's underneath. Like no central heating for example. And a premium price.

I'm not sure, however, that this is my problem to address, because I need a new place that is heated in winter without such extraordinarily expensive auxiliary equipment. I need a place that is more economical to run. The ambience here will be hard to match in some respects, but I can't afford to get too attached to that idea -- it costs the earth.

The idea of talking to the locals is a necessity. That's about the only way anybody ever finds a place here and it's the way I got this one. By the time something is advertised it's too late. It could well be that a woman is the one who helps me. I am surrounded by women at work and most of my relatives here are women. I'm only close friends with one man, and I don't think he's the type to scout around for properties -- too busy on his own projects.

So far as empty nest -- the last of my children finishes university in two weeks and already has plans to live in another country. They're all adults now, and i'll see them intermittently, which has been more or less the case for a couple years. None of them has lived in this house with me really, so this has been a transition of sorts. I do have to the feeling though, Pocossin, that another move is to my benefit to put down some roots. The place I'm in just doesn't have that possibility and I have to get settled somewhere that is a longterm prospect -- and affordable.

Oh, about being a harlot. I think I have overshot that opportunity by a couple decades. Also, the population where I live is a bit long in the tooth, so probably not much call for harlots anyway. But, all the same, I do wonder about some of the interpretation for Hex 44 -- highly uncomplimentary of women in some respects. And I had a difficult time associating most of the usual meanings for Hex 44 with this question. I have to wonder what kind of women Richard Wilhelm had in his acquaintance.

I find it useful to think of the Maiden in Coming to Meet - which I call The Urge to Merge - as meaning not a harlot, but the instinctive unconscious desires that can influence a person to do things that feel good in the moment but lead to trouble in the long run - like having unprotected sex. 44 cautions that such impulses can be quite strong - The maiden is powerful - but that ultimately one should not make decisions based on the heat of the moment - one should not marry such a maiden.
I look at the Image, "thus does the prince act when disseminating his commands and proclaiming them to the four quarters of heaven" and it reads to me that the I Ching is telling us at times there are feelings we are called to do something but we're not necessarily meant to be take these feelings all that literally. Like when the sun is shining and the bees are humming and Nature is alerting Everyone that Spring is in the Air.. this still doesn't mean you personally are supposed to throw caution to the wind. (Interesting the trigrams are Heaven and Wind, a feeling in the air..). Conversely, when the housing market is tight and your landlord has put your place on the market this still doesn't mean you are going to have the rug jerked out from under you.
I think getting 44 is advising you that you need not act out of fear.
44.2 is about containment, keep those fears in check. 44.4 describes what could happen it you let the fish out of the tank, like if your fears run you and you impulsively move to something unsuitable and then are not able to move when the right situation appears.
53. Sounds very positive for your search and that everything works out in the end.

Perhaps it is saying that even this feeling anxious is all part of the process !

You know Rosada, your last observation is really interesting, that anxiety may be part of something important to the future. Because this is creating a certain anxiety for whether it's worthwhile to stay here, whether I should choose something easier or take up an opportunity I have in another country. And this is confirming for me how I feel about this place and the possibilities in it. I want to be here. I'm just not entirely sure HOW to do it yet. But knowing suddenly that it matters to me, I've started thinking what other resources I have to build, what I must do to flesh out the situation and make it an entire lifestyle.
