How do you interpret a "When" question?

Is there a specific way to interpret a "when" question? I have read from a website (which i cannot remember where exactly...) that each week of the year is represented by one hexagram and each month of the year is represented by one hexagram.

So, if you were to receive hexagram 17.6 > 25 for a when question, should i be looking at hexagram 17 or 25 on the Chinese lunar calendar?

There are many ways to prognosticate dates with the Yijing. This is just one of them that may help you: Times

the hex is coordinated to ...month

..aehm...i think it would be great to receive a little help...
i don't know exactely how to translate from my Book in italien, but i'd need to ask here what does it mean that an hex or a particular phase or circumstance of one's life (i.e. danger) is coordinato at that particular month that Yi speaks about.
i knew that it can mean that the aspect of one hex is, for instance, connected to "autumn' traits"; or that "in eight months from the moment of the consultation" this or that happens (see hex 20 or 19). it is clear to me that these info are not enough and maybe not even correct..

someone feels in teaching more about this here or linking me to a previous specific discussion, please?:bows:

i have to add that i didn't manage to find this topic in ED and from paragraphs up here in sparhawk' link i had bit of problem in english understanding...

Timing

Hi Tifa,

Is there a specific way to interpret a "when" question? I have read from a website (which i cannot remember where exactly...) that each week of the year is represented by one hexagram and each month of the year is represented by one hexagram.

There are multiple ways to do so. Check the link Luis posted and track down messages by Jesed who bothered years ago with perseverance to explain how he does it using the method indicated by Luis.

A couple of other ways that I know of that vary in complexity:

  • a branch yijing calculation method known under the name of Liu Yao Yi gua/Wang Wang ba gua) will provide a possible time frame where changes may occur and inform you regarding what they may produce.
  • some hexagrams have a time frame by themselves, like hex.11 and hex.12 refer to respectively 1st and 7th month of the year, this information is provided by most translations. When the resulting hexagram matches a calendrical hexagram you know something may occur in the given time frame because the resultign hexagram agrees with the time frame substance.
  • some hexagram texts will clearly provide you with timing information (check hex. 18, hex. 57-9)
  • simple counting... multiple application: I'll just give you an example and I'm sure you can go from there. Say you're doing a routine divination for the coming week and you do this on monday morning and that you obtain 4th yao moving. This hints that on the fourth day counting from the starting day some change will occur (namely thursday). For a hint of what may occur then check the resulting hexagram. If your divination time frame is more about a day or a month or a year adapt the number of time units to the hexagram structure.
  • if the reading is done for a particular day, I tend to consider that the day is cut in two, the morning being the inner trigram and the afternoon the upper trigram. Any changing line will be an indication of what may happen when. Line 1 changing will be something happening early in the morning, line 6 changing will be something happening late in the afternoon or in the evening. I've noticed that 3rd line changing often matches lunch-time events.
There are other systems based on na jia that calculate a hex based on any time unit expressed as a combination of stems and branches (meaning you could calculate a hex for a year, month, day, bi-hour), from here you can link to bazi or any najia based system to derive information but it's probably a bit out of the scope here.

So, if you were to receive hexagram 17.6 > 25 for a when question, should i be looking at hexagram 17 or 25 on the Chinese lunar calendar?
If your question involves a time frame, then you want to know when the change will occur, meaning you check the time frame for hex. 17 or 17.6 depending on the technique you pick up. 25 will happen when the change at 17.6 will have played.

Good luck.

Hello Nahalie,

Thank you for the input. I tried searching for "jesed" user name on the forum and I receive zero search results. I do remember seeing the username on Clarity when I was using Google search. It would be helpful if you could remember the topic/ thread title? I am having problem tracking the thread down.

Thanks
Tifa

Well, Jesed (Rodrigo) requested to be taken off the forum's user list and there they went all the links to his posts. Pity, really. However, try this

OH no. What a tragedy. Is there a way to contact him anymore?

Well, he's on Facebook... However, as far as I know, he's not doing any more consultations but concentrating on his Law School studies at Notre Dame.

Thank you sparhawk! it is useful to look through jesed's interpretation and observe how the technique was applied.

;)
