Hi all - i'm a relative novice at divinations but have been doing some reading on changing lines. Most of the texts I read (regarding more than one line change) suggest you should focus on the second line (of 2 changing), the middle line (of 3 changing) and so on...

However, when looking at the shared reading noticeboard here oftentimes people will help decipher a reading by focusing on all changing lines in the hexagram. Shouldn't the 'rules' (I know these don't exist with iching) above be noted and only the relevant changing lines be taken into consideration?

Happy to share some thoughts...

No of course not. Such rules as you describe are quite arbitrary. They may suit some people so they use them but personally I would not recommend them.. There is no good reason anyone would focus on the middle line with 3 changing lines....unless they find it works for them of course. There are many ways to view multiple changing lines. They can be seen as different options, they might be seen as sequential, which I find often does apply. They show us change patterns which add a layer to a reading and of course mean we get the relating hexagram we do.....There is now a foundations course which you can just do at your own pace now in CC or maybe there will be something in the free 'Learn' section here http://www.onlineclarity.co.uk/learn/ Also there's been so many threads on how to deal with multiple changing lines if you read around you'll find plenty of views on your question.

Hi, mc123,

Indeed, the I Ching doesn’t provide any rule. It all depends on the diviner. Some local diviners here even read only the original hexagram.

Theoretically speaking, when a line obtains 9 (the old Yang) or 6 (the old Yin), it starts to move (toward the other gender). We call it moving line.
The text of the I Ching is presented in the form of, for instance, 39: …….. (the text); this means that the text is given when line 3 obtains 9 (and starts to move toward Yin but it is still Yang). Therefore the text of using 9 of hexagram 1 is taken for the one when all Yang start to move toward Yin (and changing to Kun but it is still Qian).
Yang changes to Yin is just like the bright daytime changing to the dark night at dusk, signifying that this will happen when the right time arrives. Similarly, the original hexagram will change to the changing hexagram when its environment matures.
Usually we take that three lines start to move, incl. the bottom line (i.e. foundation), it is the time for change. The lines that change are called the changing line.
If you are interested in learning more, you may see A) Reading method A (the conventional one) for reference.
