Hi all - i'm sort of new to the iching so first of all, congratulations for being such experts on what seems a very complex and interesting subject! I recently asked the iching about a relationship situation (it's probably the most common question the oracle gets!!) - about where I am in terms of reconnecting with someone very special to me, who in the past was very special to me, and the feeling was mutual...we went through some tough times and I wasn't the best person to be around which led her to put distance between us and not be as close.

Anyway I got two unchanging hexagrams - firstly 52 and then when I asked for an update, I got 5 unchanging.

Both seemed to convey a similar message, that of fixing myself, perservering and then being patient. My understanding, from reading these forums is for unchanging hexagrams you should read the judgement and image only, and not the lines? Or do the lines have a role in unchanging hexagrams too? Or do I only read the 'ruling' line?

Apologies for so many questions, and once again thanks in advance.

Those are the recommendations commonly: to read the Judgement and the Image. But the socalled Sequences also plays an important role, in Your case:
Hex. 52: "Things cannot be kept in a state of movement forever but eventually are brought to a stop. This is why Zhen [Quake, Hexagram 51] is followed by Gen [Restraint]. Gen here means 'to stop'. " (The classic of Changes, as interpreted by Wang Bi. Richard John Lynn, Columbia University Press, N.Y. 1994)
The hexagram in itself, when meeting it, plays a role in an ungoing evolutionary cyclus; so You sort of find Yourself in a state that relates to this natural evolution, thus the sequences.

Very interesting and thanks - I find it fascinating also that the two hexagrams seem linked as well and aren't arbitrary. Like they are reiterating a very similar message. Hexagram 5 especially seems to be a direct order - be patient!

I sometimes find the lines confusing however, as the image or judgement will be 'positive' (I know this is a simplistic take on it) but then individual lines will appear to be warnings. Maybe of how things can pan out if I do a), b) or c).

Not sure if it helps, but I find unchanged hexagrams to be sort of finger pointing or underlining the idea of the hexagram-concentrate on the core of it, as a simple answer perhaps.

Oh wow great link thanks, and also thank you dragona. Simple is best sometimes...it definitely rings true, hexagram 5 especially as I feel if I did try to push things she would retreat whereas keeping in touch and being there, but also being cheerful is a very sensible piece of advice.
