In a recent question to the oracle, I believe it let me down both in the advice it gave me and in the prediction it made. Yes, I realize my interpretation could have been off; and I also realize that you can't always depend on the Oracle as a perfect fortune-teller -- especially if one isn't adept at interpreting it.

But I decided to ask the I Ching why I didn't seem to get an accurate reading. The result was 2:1,5>3.

I'd appreciate any thoughts on this.

Your answer suggests to me that there is still much about the situation to unfold...it may not appear so but maybe there are other factors under the surface affecting the question behind the question. What i am struggling to say is is may seem to you the situation has finalised but perhaps the deeper issues are still unfolding. I think it seems there really is something still going on here. Hex 3, full of chaos, something struggling to find form to be born but its too early to make things tangible and its too early to make things tangible also in 1.1. But 1.5 indicates theres a real potent energy on the move...so it could be you are looking at a much shorter timescale than the answer...you think the answer has already happened but it hasn't really, not yet.

Thats my take anyway :)

I feel that you misinterpreted your answer, as some answers are not what they seem to be, and it seems you are still having trouble even understanding your own answers.

Welcome back, Bostonian. I missed you. You vanished around June 12 and left a thread open

thanks for the welcome. I have been lurking but had nothing much to say. I had read yours -- and others -- responses to that thread, and they were helpful.

Too early to make things tangible.
-Trojan

(Even though this doesn't apply to Bostonian's question)
I just wanted to highlight this interpretation of 1.1. I think it's spot on.

Much as Trojan's interpretation and impression apply to Hex 1, still feel the picture she's provided is accurate and pertinent. In that you're presently/the situation is at stage 2:1 ('Treading frost, hard ice as culmination'), the final stage being 2:5 will be one of good fortune: 'A yellow apron. Spring significant' (Ritsema & Sabbadini). Hex 3 could be describing the background.

Why didn't I get an accurate reading?
2.1.5 > 3

Hexagram pictures: Soil, Carriage

You didn't get an accuracte reading (this isn't the first time) because your growth (Tun) in divination is not in good soil (Kun).

It is rare for the second hexagram to be the next in sequence to the first. Your typo in stating the casting is also significant. The shift from Kun to Qian is a shift from the implicit (xuan) to the explicit. But divination depends on the implicit.

Text:

2J
The Receptive brings about sublime success,
Furthering through the perseverance of a mare.
If the superior man undertakes something and tries to lead,
He goes astray;
But if he follows, he finds guidance.
It is favorable to find friends in the west and south,
To forego friends in the east and north.
Quiet perseverance brings good fortune.

New influences are needed.

2I
The earth's condition is receptive devotion.
Thus the superior man who has breadth of character
Carries the outer world.

Inner character is expressed in the outer world.

2.1
Six at the beginning means:
When there is hoarfrost underfoot,
Solid ice is not far off.

Cold suppresses vitality. What was the cold in your divination process?

2.5
Six in the fifth place means:
A yellow lower garment brings supreme good fortune.

Whincup thinks this yellow garment is an emblem of the king's chief minister. I think it may be an emblem of enfeoffment. In either case there is an expansion of power. What would expand your divinatory power and prevent future failures? Walden helped me.

3J
Difficulty at the Beginning works supreme success,
Furthering through perseverance.
Nothing should be undertaken.
It furthers one to appoint helpers.

Get help.

Looking at the sequence for a moment...
Hexagram l is this strong yang life force, it builds until at 1.5 the dragon is flying high, but by 1.6 he'd better come down and at 2.1 the light is definitely waning and we're just coasting down to earth looking for a soft landing. Could this mean the original inspiration was not very strong? I wonder if this could mean your original question was not clear? Or perhaps you did not deeply meditate on the answer? Anyway, 2.1 makes me think the I Ching is saying the light was not strong and thus did not enlighten.
2.5 seems like it should mean something positive but maybe it is saying that without strong new inspiration you were thrown back on your own inner resources and as this situation was new to you, you didn't really have past experiences and inner resources to draw on. The result was the IChing couldn't take you very far before it all seemed very 3ish, new and confusing.

It didn't, never does ...

2.1.5. is just a slow start ( difficult beginning ) for your original question/matter. if you look around and spot some signs of development ( 2.1 ) then the end is not far.

I think "The I Ching let me down" would be a great (blues ?) song title. A refreshing variation on the 'My baby done me wrong" theme

During this morning's pre-dawn walk, I was contemplating how an answer I received last week about an awkward situation has only now, this very morning, become manifest in a perfectly clear way. I agree with Trojan here, we sometimes need some time for Yi's answers to completely unfold to our understanding, assuming our attention span lasts that long to notice.

Yes, I've had that experience in the past myself.
