I should add that, IMO, he could do much better focusing those cubes using other sequences and not the 8x8 square of the hexagram locator. It isn't the "standard layout," but a convenient devise.

I agree. All the 8x8 arrangements emphasize the powers of 2 involved over the philosophy that results. However, noting that the Chou Yi is all about explaining the eternal flux of perceived reality in terms of patterns numbered 1-30 and then 31 to 60 and a final abstract symbolic 4 numbered 61 to 64 doesn't offer the satisfaction of digging out number magic by your own special arrangement.

Reminds me of the remark of a friend asking how did the ancients, without GPS satellites align their sacred sites to absolute geographical North. I replied, every vertical stick in the N. Hemisphere points exactly there every day as the sun goes directly overhead, casting its shortest shadow of the day. Aligning to anything else would have been tough for them.
