Hi - I rely and have relied heavily on life decisions as well as leaning on the I Ching to calm me down for many years. This time, however, the reading seems so conflictual that I decided to join and ask for help in interpreting this casting. I have a new therapist and have had 3 sessions of depth hypnosis with him. He seems excellent- but apart from interesting, spiritually charged dreams I haven't made any breakthroughs. I just want to know if this is going to be a productive path for me- and it's not inexpensive, so asking the I Ching for an opinion. However, three measly sessions isn't really enough to know much from personal experience. The first trigram is really auspicious- Clarity, lines 1 , 2 and then sadly 4, changing to hexagram 18, decidedly in my view pretty negative. But perhaps it's my faulty view of Corruption, or its connection to the question about having more sessions itself. I'd really appreciate some feedback on this one, and I have great faith in the collective wisdom of all of you! Thanks in advance.

Hi Kichijo

The way I see your answer is that there are, as it were, 2 answers. One about the therapy and one about your attitude towards therapy.
And both require Clarity (H30) and work, a Remedy/Repair (H18).

The lower trigram Fire is out of balance because of the 2 moving lines and this shows that you are too attached to a short-term result. When these lines change then trigram Wind arises, this is the trigram of the long term, moving forward step by step and communication.
The bottom 2 lines are the so-called Earth or Jing lines. These lines represent the I and also the unconscious, the impulses. As moving lines they call for renewal, a different attitude.

1st line says: Confused footsteps. If one has respect, no blame.
You are at the beginning of working with a different therapist, everything is new and perhaps different. If you can accept that, then there is no problem.
2nd line: Yellow light. Supreme good fortune
This is about moderation (yellow) in your attitude towards the therapist and the outcome. Give it a chance in the long run.

The 4th line is part of the HUMAN or CHI lines and these are about emotions and connecting with others, among other things.
The text of this line says: It comes suddenly. It burns up, dies out, and is thrown away
To me, this text seems more like a warning not to give up too soon. It seems to refer to your current attitude towards the therapist and the outcome.
When the 4th line moves, trigram Fire changes to Mountain. The trigram of distancing yourself from your emotions and being tenacious,

Together these trigram form H18. In my opinion, hexagram 18 is not a negative hexagram (I don't believe there are positive or negative hexagrams anyway), but indicates the process you are currently engaged in, namely clearing things that are in the way with the help of a therapist. Other names for H18 are Repair and Remedying. Perhaps that better reflects the process you are in ;)

In my opinion, there is another layer in these hexagrams and that is about getting emotionally involved in therapy yourself. Trigram Fire, as mentioned earlier, is about the mental, the thinking. Among other things, this trigram is associated with armour. So it takes effort to get to the real feelings. So H30 in combination with H18 also seems to say that a real result can only be achieved when you yourself participate and don't just let it depend on the therapist.

Hope it's of some use to you.

30: 1.2.4 <> 18
'Brightness' through 'Remedying'

Your query is based in wanting to know if continuing to see this therapist is a productive path for you and wraps itself around concerns about whether this therapy is good value for money.

Yi could well be saying this path can be seen going forward as one that will be restorative for you (18) - the big proviso with 18 is that it requires of you to engage fully and to work on what is corrupt in you. Yi advocates that you mobilise and nurture yourself.

30 provides an image of the removing of darkness through your words and deeds shining out like never before. As your virtue grows it allows you opportunities to see your inner and outer world for what it is. However its down to you to care for and raise your cow.

30.1 - Right now you are not seeing things clearly or in their true light. Be wary how you tread.
30.2 - When your walk aligns with your clearer talk you will be on the right path.
30.4 - Old habits - thoughts, words and actions-may flare up. Let these come and, most importantly, go. These masks will not help you any more.

... or it might carry a different meaning for you.

Good Luck

Hi Kichijo

I really don't see this as negative at all. Speaking as a therapist myself (so there's always that :D) the Oracle appears to be saying that by 'working on what has been spoiled' or on 'what has been corrupted' (18) you will move towards 'clarity' in your life. The lines, I'd suggest, describe steps on that journey. Using Zhu Xi's rules, when 3 lines are moving, the middle line takes priority. So that's line 2 which is essentially a call for 'moderation'. Not too much enthusiasm, or hope, and not too much dismay or despair as you go through the process of therapy. Karcher, in his 'Myths for Change' describes this line with: "You acquire the Way and the Centre". Sounds good to me!
