6.1.3.4.5.6. This one's a doozy because of all the changing lines. I'm assuming in a case like this it's best not to put too much weight on all the lines but to focus on the hexagrams? I'm trying to piece these 2 together... Peaceful conflict? Peace after conflict? Conflicted peace? Something bittersweet? (Line 6 is bittersweet for sure) Maybe I'll have to fight for this good thing, and it isnt going to magically fall into my lap?

I've read about the technique where you only read the one unchanging line but it doesn't sit right with me. If it's worked for any of you in the past though, I'm willing to consider it.

"Peace" isn't the best name for 11. "Flow" seems to fit better, and sometimes there's nothing remotely peaceful about it.

I agree it's probably more important to get a good handle on the hexagrams. Keep an eye on the lines, though - they're not completely unimportant (of course) and you might recognize them as time goes on.

A couple of things that have helped me with 5-line readings:
- the unmoving line seems to be pointedly unmoving; there's a message in it being the only line that's not part of the advice/answer. Ask yourself why it's not relevant.
- the two hexagrams are almost-but-not-quite perfectly balanced, or almost-but-not-quite perfectly complementary or opposite each other. Does that give you any ideas?

Also, you asked a yes/no question and got a complicated answer: pretty much the polar opposite of one word. So try to identify what was behind your question, what you were really asking, or what you think Yi might really be addressing. For instance, "How can I get something good in my life?" or whatever it might be. (And consider avoiding yes-no questions. When you want to ask one - and of course it's very tempting since they work perfectly well in real life with people - try to dig beneath it and come up with a question that's a better fit with what Yi's going to give you anyway.)

Did you mean anything specific with "anything good"? Love, money, better job, nicer place to live, free candy bar...any or all of that... do you think Yi could be describing what the good thing might be and what it won't be?

I wonder if line 6 might be hinting around that "anything good" is inherently fraught and resistant to being settled. Unfortunately it seems to be the nature of life oftentimes that the bad stuff takes up residence a lot more easily than the good stuff. Maybe Yi's giving you a philosophy lesson on how to think about the general notion.

(I said "takes up residence" innocently, and I'm very unsure about this, but could that be what line 2 missing is getting at? That there's kind of no such thing as an "escape to your town"...something like that?)

Is anything good coming into my life? 6 > 11

Possibly yes, but the reading shows a situation in which it is necessary to "bring forth strength within oneself" that makes one seek to participate in a more moderate position in this "conflict" in which a common ground is needed between oneself and everything that surrounds one that lead to a more harmonious way of living.
Can you imagine a situation seen as a whole, composed of conflict, common ground and harmony... can you see this whole evolving towards a more moderate position.....harmony increasing, conflict decreasing, common ground with more interests and activities carried out in order to promote the well-being and common interest of all those involved...
This is what reading is about

Sorry, I wasn't exactly looking for a clean yes/no answer, I probably should have phrased it more like "if anything good is coming into my life, what might that be?" But I asked it that way under the assumption that yi knows what I meant. I didn't have anything specific in mind, just anything at all that might brighten my mood or ease my suffering, because I've been experiencing some serious anguish recently. I mean, the last 10 years have been brutal but with positive moments interspersed, so I'm hoping there's another one coming up.

I am going through some legal stuff involving medical debt that has caused me to have to file for bankruptcy, does hex 6 cover that kind of thing? Maybe it'll go smoothly?

Hmm, I know hex 21 is usually considered the legal hexagram but I am about to file for bankruptcy after getting a court summons for some unpaid medical debt. That seems to fit this situation, do you think it's reassuring me that I can get through this without too much difficulty? I'd say something inherently unpleasant being resolved nicely is almost as good as something positive on its own :)

What I left was in a general sense, without knowing more details... and in fact the reading you got was 6.1.3.4.5.6 -- 11

... hex 6 - in a conflict situation, avoid extremes and look for a compromise.

hex 11 - everything interacting harmoniously... when taken to the extreme could be a utopia.

"Patterns of Change" suggest that the key to unlocking this situation is finding common ground and cultivating inner strength.

"Patterns of Change":
hex 13.... tune in to a common interest in this interaction between hex6 and hex11

hex 7... allow an accumulation of strength to build within you, allowing you to deal with this entire stagnant situation and see a more harmonious middle ground.

...as for the courts, only they will be in a position to know the outcome, but they normally serve as a way of ensuring a fairer situation under the law and providing a more balanced "middle ground".
