I wrote him an email where I proposed we simply draw a line and move on from whatever either of us might have said, leaving it all in the past. I briefly outlined the pro's and con's of working together as opposed to working at odds with one another. I highlighted the kind of successes we have been able to achieve so far, how I preferred to build on that and suggested that we meet to clear the air.
My intuition on the timing and approach to applying for that job, were indeed correct, but I deferred to my contact. On first mention of the possible opportunity my response was - how do you know they will replace him? and "They will be a little shocked and overwhelmed, I need to approach them immediately with some options before they decide it is too difficult to replace him." Essentially I could see only a tiny opening. Saying these things resulted in my contact/friend yelling at me to wait until he investigated the situation. Lose the trust of my friend or risk the possible job - essentially they were the choices that constrained my approach.
However, it is not wrong to use your horns. Grappling with this power and keeping control is probably the best you can do in the circumstances.
