Professor of History and Asian Studies Kidder Smith was among the founding faculty members of Bowdoin's Asian Studies program when he joined the College in 1981. Over the subsequent 25 years, he helped build an Asian Studies program with 15 faculty members that is among the most distinguished in liberal-arts colleges today.

Luis, you are becoming quite an academic groupie, aren't you? I suppose you have portraits of James Legge and Richard Wilhelm hanging in your bedroom? A bust of Gao Heng on your fireplace mantle? A statue of Arthur Waley in the garden?

Speaking of Kidder Smith, his 1993 article "The Difficulty of the Yijing" was the foundation of a few of my postings last week that proved so offensive no one cared to comment about them, except Bruce - who disagreed. Ah, well, cool as he is, I fear Prof. Smith would not be a forum favorite.

By the way, I'm trying to think of something to say about your "proposed new milfoil method" besides the obvious question, "Does the world need a new milfoil method?" Maybe yarrow stalks are best left where they thrive, as weeds along the side of the road.

Legge? Wilhelm? Who are them? Although, I do have a portrait of Fu Xi I painted some 4000 years ago while he dropped his chopsticks and they formed weird patterns on the floor... I'm feeling a tad brittle today...

Oh, I've read that article. I think is very good, indeed. Not sure which thread was that. Sometimes I just skip some of the really brainy ones just in case my "academic" flaws show too much...
