This Hexagram broadens the example of a man's encounter with a powerful woman to encompass all meetings of between unequal individuals or between individuals and groups or organisations which are only interested in a particular qualities (as opposed to totalities). Here an individual's potency is seen as cyclic- focusing on it's object, offering input, and then relapsing into a neutral, balanced but drained state, in which its input is no longer important to the other. (A powerful yang force expands, is giving, can contribute what is needed by any individual. A powerful yin contracts, is needy of specific input.)
The lower trigram deals with 1] the need for self control 2] gathered potency acting within a necessarily limited sphere 3] the consequence of profligacy
The upper trigram mirrors the lower, but speaks of further cycles of potency within a relationship; or of a reasoned overview of the same; it presents a straightforward philosophical approach to the overall process. 4] Having nothing to offer that is really wanted, as well as being in a limited, non-social, role; and being unduly susceptible to cultivating only those qualities desired by the other 5] allowing natural alignment to happen 6] either: achieving, through one's (cyclic) prowess, an equitable reputation and corrective influence; or failing that, the necessity of moving on. . .
