Is there any theory or relationship between combination of the five elements and the hexagram lines?

I'm using combinations of 3 elements to generate lines and, at the moment, I have things like:

Earth+FIre+Metal -> 6
Earth+Fire+Wood -> 6
Earth+Water+Wood -> 6
Earth+Metal+Fire -> 9
Earth+Wood+>Fire -> 9

.

I must confess i've used them without any real tought about their meaning. However, if such meaning exists, I would love to try accomodating it into the combinations.

Any suggestion?

Thanks,
Remo

Hi

Since the Han dinasty, there have been different methods to assign the 5 elements to the hexagrams as a whole, to the trigrams and to the individual lines.

Ever basic book on Wen Wang Gua includes a table to assign an earthly branch to the individual lines of any hexagram; most of those books also include the rationality behind those tables; and very few of those books also include a table to assign an heavenly stem to the individual lines as well (Jack Chiu's is one of those few).

IMHO, people have been failing at this pointless task for 22 centuries.
Why not let 5 be 5 and 8 be 8?

Thanks Brad,
I could use whatever symbol (number, letters, majhong tiles, dots), it's just a graphical aspect.

I'm using the five elements because of their ideograms, not their meaning. I was worried that someone (more knowledgeable than me) could read in those symbols more than I intended.

Good to know that nobody could claim that those combinations are "right" or "wrong" in any sense :).

Here is the latest version (for those interested). I like the feeling of the cards, and the act of shuffling feels very natural to me.
