Is it possible to ask the yi an over-general location question such as "Where will I find X" or "Where should I move to for X?"

I made the attempt to use the search function and all it appeared to do was give me the entire section.

Hi Asci blue,

it has often been mentioned in discussions here that the I ching gives answers on the querent's terms. My guess would be that it can direct you as long as you provide the map, that is, if you reach an understanding of hexagrams as geographical pointers or sth like that. You could thing of the answers as the compass' index which shows you the Way, but then you will have to know how to orient what you are looking for in relation to that, so you have to have some coordinates, a landscape in mind or a map.
And you also have to keep in mind that the answer may not be directed straight to your question, but to a line of thought you should address . .

hope that makes some sense . .

Yeah, Rodaki's got it. What Rodaki's saying is this: if you're familiar with the Yi, it'll give you directions. And I'd go further: if you're lucky, the Yi might even give you directions even if you're NOT familiar with it.

ditto Dobro
and to add to that, the sure thing about I ching is that it will in any case provide an answer -it always does
so the question in fact is not if it will provide answers, but how do you ask for those answers and more importantly, how do we read those answers
i think in the end the I ching is a constant exercise of learning to ask and learning to read . .

Maybe responses to 'where?' questions might be similar to responses to 'when.?' questions. I find that if someone asks 'When will I...?' the response tends to come back 'in this kind of time' or 'when you've done this'. So maybe the response to 'where?' would be 'in this kind of place' or 'in a place where you...'?

Anyone tried this?

No, but if X asks "How can I not be found?" things can get a little more complicated.

If you're guy, don't waste your money on maps (real men don't read that stuff), but if you're a woman, it might be more helpful than asking the Yi.

I'd noticed that about real men. It's clearly the cissies who don't realise that looking at maps is just a thinly-disguised version of asking for directions.

In the instances I've come across where people might be inclined to ask this kind of question, 'X' is typically job opportunities, congenial culture, that kind of thing. So probably not trying too hard not to be found.

I agree maps are for sissies. That's why I use GPS. :D

Hillary, you're spot on with where I'm going with my question(s) both congenial culture (I'm so using that in a conversation sometime) as well as the future of my employment.

Looking into astrocartography now!

There is definitely a component of 'when' with astrocartography ...
not just with regard to birthtime, but transits as well.

i am in the market for a dog, but i am choosing my dog as a connection/personality thing from rescues (so its a long process). last week i asked a when question, and i decided to interpret the response literally.

i got 26, unchanging. since ken can have dog as an animal attribute, and chien refers to the time period between Nov. 7th and the winter solstice, i took it as meaning that i'd find my dog around this time.

i don't know if it will work this smoothly for all when questions.

my experience with where questions was to ask where i misplaced something important to me. i had gotten 27 --> 24. i took this, again, literally. i thought maybe the lost item was in the kitchen somewhere and that i would find it again in time. it actually wasn't in the kitchen, but it showed up in my laundry basket. after finding it, i thought maybe the connection might have been that the upper trigram tui changes to kun. tui can refer to controlled wet places, and kun has clothing as an attribute.

This is just an aside, but did you know that the French word for dog is chien? Kinda funny :)
