Hello,

I am grateful to anyone who can offer me insight into the meaning of a reading I did last night. I asked the I Ching 'What direction is my career headed?' and I got hexagram 1. The Creative, with a 9 in the second place, which gave me a second hexagram: 13. Fellowship with Men.

On the whole I felt the reading was quite positive, since I am at the moment a struggling independent and unknown filmmaker. But I am a little unsure about exactly what it means.

I consulted the Wilhel/Baynes version and one element of text in Book 3: The Commentaries that I found discouraging is the final note on page 456 that says 'None of them attains the ideal. All seek fellowship on the basis of narrower relationships. For this reason, none of them attains the great success that the hexagram as a whole envisions.'

So once again, any feedback and insight is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
ryfe

This is a nice answer suggesting that you are on the right track but it will take effort and dedication to win the recognition that you are looking for, but eventually it appears that you will achieve a degree of international fame.

The dragon appears in the field. A person is ready to take action but what he can do is still limited; therefore, it is advantageous to see someone who can recognize him and give him assistance. The hexagram that evolves while this line is activated in following the mandate, is Tong Ren; fellowship (13), which suggests that one should widely make friends with others; this is possibly the advice.

This is an excerpt from another online site. I read it as clearly saying seek help...either networking in the industry, and/or seeking a mentor. Under this guidance, success can be achieved.

This reading reminds me of that old saying, "It's not what you know but who you know that counts."

1.2 changing to 13 suggests that it's going to be important to get yourself out there and meet people. Doing that will allow you to make the connections with people that can help your career develop. 1.2 indicates one-on-one relationships with people such as agents, teachers and mentors, while 13 suggests communal situations, interacting with the world at large, and relationships among equals. As an example, that could include professional organizations or projects involving groups of people.

The above are "process" considerations (in other words, how you develop your career as a filmmaker.) Hexagram 13 may also be telling you something about the content and/or subject matter of your work. Perhaps it may involve issues of community, friendships, or relationships, for example.
