Hello everyone, I am once again turning to your wisdom and experience to help me get a grip on my confusion regarding a love interest.

Long story short, it was an intense affair that ended abruptly due to him getting back together with his ex (they broke up within 2 weeks). It happened 6 months ago. Since then, this person - R, keeps liking my stories on Instagram, showing up in my notifications. We’ve seen each other at the yoga studio we go to together a few times (no conversation was ever made about the abrupt end, after the initial awkwardness the tension dissipated and we became friendly). I do have some lingering feelings. After a long while, today he messaged me with compliment regarding my art works.

I asked the I Ching:

What were his intentions with the message?

17.5 > 51

I find it interesting that the primary hexagram is Following (17) for both questions. Does that mean that we are on the same plane regarding each other?

H17 Following is Thunder Below and Lake Above.
This hexagram can be about following others as well as being followed by others. The Chinese script character is Sui which means 'hunt', so it seems that in your case a game of a cat and mouse is being played .

The upper trigram Lake changes to Water because of the moving line at the 4th position. The water that is still in Lake starts flowing again. Water has no form and no direction or purpose, it always flows to the lowest point and takes the shape of the situation it is in.
H3 shows the formlessness (Water) and chaos (Thunder) of a beginning; nothing is really fixed and everything is essentially possible.
So this could indicate that you should not take charge here but let the situation determine what happens, go with the flow so to speak.

From the point of view of following and being followed, it seems to me that he wants to get your attention here. Trigram Lake turns into Thunder, the sudden, the unexpected. The resulting hexagram H51 is Shock, the exciting above and below.

Based on your story and the Yi's answer, I would see this as: let him take charge and "follow" him in his attempt to restore contact. (note the Yi's answer says nothing about what kind of relationship he has in mind).

Personally I don't think so, it shows more something about the situation and how you can best position yourself in it.

17 has blowing through it a wind of change, which you can best engage with through looking inward so that you allow whatever no longer serves you to dissolve. you are encouraged to make an offering which may not be an easy thing for you to do (3). However if you gather your inner strength, without forcing anything, then the position you have to take up will become clear.

Approach everything with a fresh mind and be clear about what your purpose is. holding on to your old perspectives is not the way you need to follow.

This calls for you to see things clearly for what they are and then to select the most appropriate course of action for you. Do not rush into anything. Again spend time in quiet and thorough contemplation before acting. Following the right path for you will bring a new sense of freedom and achievement into your world.

... or there may be other interpretations that make more sense to you.
