I am writing a paper on the aspects of Chinese Mathematics and the Combinatorics of the I-Ching for my History and Philosophy of Mathematics class. My question to everyone would be if you could help me with this task. I have been having a little bit of trouble with this and any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

You will have to be a lot more specific and a lot less full of your own grandiosity (jargon/ brevity of a fool).

There are folk here who have been at the job for over 30 years.

Actually if you knew your subject you might even cut your throat with regard to a math submision this subject... try 2,500 years of folk trying to work the math out.

What is your question?

The subject of the paper is "Aspects of Chinese Mathematics and the Combinatorics of the I-Ching". Anything at all would be appreciated. Even a push in the right direction. I don't need to go into depth about it, I just need the basics. If you might have some links to some websites that I could check on my own that would also help.

Dear Asuguy

You have clearly not even begun to do your research.

You could fill a library on the math of the Yijing.

What mathematical relations to what?

Do you know that there are two different sequences to the Yijing?

And then the Mandui archive?

Different sequences all.

Combinatorics my foot... You have got to go fractal here before you even begin!

And then there is the theory that the sequence was scrambled to confuse the un-initiated.

Go 95% Archaeology before you even begin the math.

Who were the folk who wrote the programme? When did they live and what was their culture?

Is it math? or a Bronze Age construction to a seemingly binary code?

What is your question?

What do you want to know?

BTW

I know I am being aggressive...

Persevere...

There are people here... mathematicians of a profesorial class who might help you.

But talk real (don't patronise) and don?t float s*it.

Google the Following

Shao Yung (old spelling of name)
Shao Yong
Leibnitz + Bouvet
Andreas Schoter

And get, through interlibrary loan,
Needham, Joseph _Science and Civilization in China_
Volume Two

I also Googled and found this link. The page is about ancient Chinese math in general, perhaps it is useful for a start. I know next to nothing about math in ancient China and was surprised to learn that they had their own proof of the theorem of Pythagoras (see the link 'mathematical texts' at the bottom of the page).
About the math of the I Ching, paraphrasing line 2 of hexagram 57 I would say that diagrams were often used "in a way bordering on confusion".

Kevin, what's going on? Is it the flu or the soup?

Erm... Some medication for the flu - seems to have blown my brains last night.

Apologies Asuguy.
