hi all,

a while ago a very good friend of mine entered into a relationship with some guy. They seem to be going strong, but she seems relectant to talk about him, and the one time she did actually mention him, she spoke negatively of him. Naturally I'm a little concerned that she isn't staying in the relationship because she wants to, but for other reasons. I asked the I ching to comment on how things were between them and I got 39.1.3.4 changing to 24. I'm really very unsure as to what this is trying to tell me...maybe the twenty four is saying that i shouldn't worry about it because if she wants out, she''ll leave of her own accord. its the other one im really confused by...is it actually commenting on their relationship or is it telling me i shouldn't do anything about this because everything is fine between them or she'll sort it out by herself? I know the Yi usually directly answers the question you asked but, I'm uncertain if it is this time or not...anyway does anyone have any comments on this?

thanks.

Why would you ask about her in the first place??

I find it difficult to get accurate answers from I Ching that don't relate directly to me.
It's hard to know what attracts people to each other and the strongest elements are usually unconscious.

You might want to ask I Ching what you are concerned about.

Hey Quale
i've found that if my motive is confused there my be a synchronicity between the two questions- the asked and the inner one. first though, 39.1.3.4 changes to 17; 39.1.3.5 to 24. which is it? 39 often deals with couples working on their problems, its called obstacles because that's where one's attention is drawn, if they're faced- "coming" towards them, towards each other- they can be solved, and in the process bonding occurs. its healthy, in whatever sense building up a dependency is healthy (okay, i'm a little bitter). 39 changing to 24 means they come and go freely with each other, which might well carry a conotation of familiar contempt, all they do is deal with obstacles all the time-

But the line confusion is a tell-tale here: line 5 has friends coming to help, as it were, the couple hide their squabbles and get aid, which might be unifying for them or might say that there is an interloper- one who presents the pose that shows them up, shows their processes up, as petty (well, it could be they are how could i know)- and presents himself as a viable alternative. but if it is the 4th line-?

anyway it never hurts to mention- even stoicly- that you care; if the reading was for you, that's how i'd read it- espeacially 0n the 39.1.3.4 changes to following(17) axis-

i'm still a little unclear on what 24 is saying though

Peace - I asked because this is someone who would normally talk to me about anything and everything but...thats not a bad idea, didn't think of asking what i'm concerned about

24 is like homing pigeons. in crises people go back to what supports them. there are levels and plateaus though. you might go back to your wife for support, but if that dont do it, you'd go back to your mother and if even that doesnt work, you might go back to the bar. . .

just a point of addendum to the above: that's why they "closed the mountain passes", in a time of return the setting of boundaries for our own and others' fields of action is imortant; people tend to follow lines of least resistance- return is like the weak force in physics. . .
