Help! I still haven't quite figured out what to do when I get more than one changing line. Which is correct, when they often seem so contradictory? For instance, i just got four changing lines. I'm muddled in stress and confusion right now, and asked for any advice. It seems I am being reassured that things will turn out good: hexagram 19 turning into 1. However, the lines were 3,4,5, and 6. I'm puzzled. Thanks!

These Come From Hilary...

Hi Laurie
I'm taking the e-mail I Ching Course with Hilary, so this is from Hilary's course:
Moving Lines
1) are telling a story
2) represent alternative choices or attitudes
3) represent different people within your situation

I hope this helps!:)
Peace

Thanks, Peace...that does help. But how do you know which to choose?

Personally the more changing lines I have the less attention i pay to them, and the more attention I pay to the 'sentence' the 2 hexagrams make. I find this works well for me though i don't think many here do it that way. So for example i wouldn't worry too much about all those lines in your reading but look at what 19 to 1 is saying. Alot of changing lines mean a situation on the brink of change, I can't see the point of agonising over each line in this case, makes it too static and heavy when its not at all. What does 19 to 1 say to you ? The approach of a creative, inspirational time perhaps, the beginings of a positive new change you have to work to realise but that nevertheless will be beneficial if you commit yourself with energy. Just play about in your mind of how 19 and 1 would interact together - seems to me at any event effort is going to pay off for you now.

The only time i pay much attention to changing line is if i have only one or two lines changing, I get more sense of my reading that way .

Thanks, Trojan, that makes sense to me, and kind of what I've been doing intuitively when I see all those lines! But one or two lines, that's definately easier to work with(one of the lines ususally makes more sense as it relates to the situation that the other does). I appreciate your feedback.

ummm.. the one which works for you.

Conversely to Trojan's method, I'll take all the change lines I can get. To me, it all tells a story. There are other methods besides these, obviously. Far as I know, there is no correct way, other than what works best for you.

A couple of things to consider, should you choose to use all the lines given -

Each line doesn't have to apply at the same point in time. Book of Changes uses time, and to let things unfold sometimes takes more time than others.

Secondly, not every answer is completely black or white. More lines gives you more to consider: more options, more perspectives, perhaps more shades of gray as well.

Some believe the Yi "tells you what to do". I'm not one of them. Yi shows me choices and options. My last serious reading had 6 change lines, and I'm relishing each one of them.

Hang with it, experiment. You just have to find what works best for you. Maybe others will offer their methods.

Hi molaurie

This is too my approach to moving lines. But how do you know which to choose? My method is to look at the hexagram as two trigrams. The trigram below is in short about the physical, inside, behind, etc. shape aspect of the situation. The trigram above is about the mental, outside, in front, etc. colour aspect of the situation. The trigram below symbolize the graviation force of the moon; that's why it's primary shape. The trigram above symbolize the the lifecreating force of the sun; that's why it's primary colour.

Try look at your hexagram 19.3.4.5.6 answer from a trigram point of view? To me the 19.3 changing line looks different to the other changing lines, because it's the only changing line in the trigram below. I think that it's the most important to understand of your four changing lines, because it's one half of your answer.

Hallo Laurie,

I have also a different aproach, hopefully it will not to complicated for you but anyway this is the way I do it. When there are four changing lines then I take the lowest not changing line in the second hexagram. The idea behind it is that the situation is changing so quickly that it is already in the situation of the second hexagram. In your case. I would read the first line of 1, this line is a resume of the 4 changing lines of 19.
And than you come into the situation of 44.

Hi

It looks that you are having the same situation with replies to your question as you had with changing lines :) Which to choose ?

I think all. What other members have answered is good advise and works, see the last part of bruce_g message and the first part of lienshan's message, are very wise ways :bows:

But all the messages contain true good tips...try and experiment, as there is an hexagram which fits more exactly a situation, there is a method which will fit more exactly YOU .

I personally choose lines, when changing, by their proximity to Earth (down) or to Heaven (top), the more near the bottom, more Yin tendency and when more near the top, more Yang tendency. This is the Hsien method but not necessarily the best for you, as said before,...experiment and find YOUR best way
