So, I'm just finishing my master thesis and have decided to further pursue research on calligraphy. My financial status does not allow me big gestures but I have found an organization that funds research projects in Japan so i was thinking of applying to go and start calligraphy classes there. In the meantime I am trying to forge alliances with institutions here in Europe (the Netherlands, UK or Germany) so as to get accepted in their funded research programs. I asked the I-ching "How should I proceed in order to attract good fortune and support with regard to my endeavors" and got 63.1 to 39.
It sounds very ominous to me but deep down i have almost made my decision. Calligraphy has had its charm on me ever since I started playing around with letters and I feel that this is my chance to bring it in my life in a major way, but the I ching seems to be negative about it . . Could you provide some insight/advice on that it would realy mean a lot! Am I being just stubborn with this? Should i change course and try sth different? :brickwall:

Thanks for the reply Twilight!

Well, the idea was to try to see the one practice through the other . . since I'm only an aspiring calligrapher though, obviously such a project would not be possible. Still I am hoping to engage with both in the future since both feel very dear and see where that could take me . .

Retreat, I am not worried about, but it seems 39 talks about a hindrance demanding more than a tactical maneuver like retreat. "Obstruction" to me signals that one has taken a wrong turn in the road . . LiSe writes on 39.1 (not the line I got since my answer went from 63 to 39 and I know some people don't agree with reading it the other way round but it does make sense sometimes)

"When your situation feels bad or poor or restricted, then don’t turn around to look at it. Go forward, with a bright and clean future before you. This is the way to be full of energy and expectations, to take away the heaviness on your legs and mind and make them swift again. Why carry a past which is not beneficial for you? Even a past which is only a minute ago can freeze everything, so look forward, towards living. If you expect life, life will come."

What I am wondering is if the i-ching is advising me to leave aside altogether the idea of calligraphy, since it has been in the back of my mind for a long time and involve myself with something new. In a post called "About a post degree" there was talk of 63 as referring to "ghosts of the past" . . Should I leave then behind previous preoccupations or just my attitude to them (which by the way was that of retreating since there was no available way of going ahead with calligraphy in the past)?

:bows:

I love the idea of standing still and by the sheer determination of your decision to persevere finding a way beyond obstruction. I guess it could be a bit similar to moments before making a mark in the immeasurable whiteness of paper, finding the pass in the mountain.
Coming to think of it, obstruction coming from the past could also be seen as my own shadow lighted from behind, from what i have done so far (63).
Thnx again for the input, I guess i just needed to hear that!;)
