I've been alone (and sad for many many reasons) for almost two years now. Last night i asked the Yi to tell me something about my emotional (romantic) life (i don't have any at the moment and things seem rather bleak), but in the short term. The answer was 31 with no changing lines. I'm not sure as to how to take that, but i found it quite funny and nice anyway. Just to share.

Actually I think maybe it is telling you to be receptive to advances made to you. "The superior man invites people to approach him by his readiness to receive them" Perhaps someone is pursueing you and you haven't noticed.

Hello Seeker, the problem is I don't have nobody interesting around. There is always someone on the pursuit of course, but never the one I would like to spend my time with (no one I'm attracted to). It's seems things like 'unexpected encounters' never happen to me. And my circle of friends (90% couples) seem very closed. No one new popping out. That's why I was asking. Don't know.

I would like to discuss whether is it possible for us, and our desires, to influence Yi.
An answer like 31, regarding relationship, is crystal clear, there are no chances of misunderstandings.
I know for sure a friend of mine influenced tarot cards, i.e I was able, knowing her desires, to guess which cards would appear.

Or maybe sometimes Yi has a sense of black humour and reacts so when bothered by excessive consultation or advices not followed.

So could I ask you, Merrylittlefrog, what about previous consultations ?
What was your state of mind when consulting ?

I got rough answers from Yi when not correctly focused, now I follow a kind of ritual before consulting, i.e. a bit of sitting meditation, incense, may be a cup of yogic tea..

Just to understand better the situation and trying to find an explanation.

Paolo has hit on some important nuances.

I believe that Yi is usually more about "how to" than "what if".

31 describes ?how to? go about a courtship. It is a universal principle that applies to all sincere, and therefore durable attractions of opposites. The youngest son defers to the youngest daughter. This is the basis of courtship. The proverbial Prince and his courted Princess-to-be.

As the potential Princess, Merrylittlefrog, it would further you to refine your own nature so as to attract a Prince who is worthy of you.

The Yilin is an ancient text with a verse for all hexagram changes (1-1, 1-2, 1-3 etc), in total 4096 verses.
For 31 unchanging (31 to 31) it says:

?A female bird lives all alone
She returns to the nest of her birth
her feathers are withered
her mind is like dying embers?

(birth or origin, same character, I think it can also indicate a withdrawn place in your mind)

It seems the Yi described the situation very good, not only the visible facts, but also your way of feeling about it. As if it says ?this is how things are, think about it, do you want to change them or not??

I think if you ask questions now how you could change things, you?d get good answers.

Hi everyone! It is this principle of attraction I don't understand. I believe I'm always trying to 'refine my own nature' (and not just for romantic purposes). I think of it as a question of chances. You may meet or not someone who is right for you. I can't help seeing it more as something like 'good luck' now. I'm not shutting myself in my room. It's just that things don't come around. Difficult to explain. Probably asking the Yi I was trying to understand why this happens to me.

I think that the second hexagram often reflects the question, the state of mind or the situation of the questioner.
If that is the case the first hexagram contains the answer.
If there are no changing lines the first and the second hexagram are the same: the answer is the question.
So a hexagram with no changing lines can be a kind of no-answer that throws the question back to the questioner. It may help the questioner, though, because it clarifies his/her question (or state of mind or situation).
The Yi says, in effect: "this is what you are really asking" or "this is your situation or state of mind".

I find that when I have been 'out of the loop' for an extended period of time, I need to jump start my battery to get things going again. I would pick up the date adds and maybe look for 'just friends' or someone who sounds like a possibility and give them a call. I read 31 as either doing the wooing, being the one who is wooed or the process of wooing in general. Since it is such an active rather than passive hexagram, I would certainly take the initiative in a small manageable step.

Maybe a different question can help the Yi. I have been in a similar situation for a long time, and while things haven't yet changed I got an answer that help me a lot understand the issue. My question was How can I help myself to break this pattern of being alone that I don't want.

I have sometimes received answers from Yi which didn't make sense in the moment, yet became crystal clear at same later point.

We aren't always aware of everything happening right in front of us. I've found this to be especially true during dark times, when I'm feeling sad or alone, and the world just feels small. What I've learned, is that the way the world may SEEM at a given point ("my circle of friends is closed," as you write) is simply not the whole story of what the world is. There is more going on around you (and us all) than you are aware of.

I agree with the wisdom already shared here, and I'll add my version: 31 comes to tell you how to approach your love life. To be open to receiving the attraction that is available to you, to participate in the dynamic nature of the world, to bring your awareness to the laws of attraction, the dance of opposites, to open yourself to the larger story of life by remembering the world is wide, it is not small.
