I actually believe that if I were to make a bar graph of all my recurring hexagrams, 44 would probably be the most frequent.

I am really struggling in pretty much every way - financially, mentally, relationship, jobs. I asked the I-Ching

What is the diagnostic of the situation:
44.1.3.5.6 -> 54
(Coming to Meet -> Propriety)

What action is advised:
48.4.6 -> 44
(Well -> Coming to Meet)

What am I not understanding about hexagram 44 that it appears so frequently? I have a bit of a "haunted" past and I find Karcher's work quite helpful but for some reason I'm still not "getting it".

I would REALLY appreciate any insights about this reading or about Hexagram 44 in general.

Hi riching
Karcher seems to be one of the easier themes to unravel and follow for 44. It always helps when you read his words over a few times. 'Total I Ching' gives good succinct meanings as well as drifting off into the poetic and mythical worlds of Karcher-land.

Following the sequence or the image can give clearer understanding.

43 - 'Deciding and Parting' - making a firm decision about what to do and then giving your full commitment to it.
44 - 'Coupling / Royal Bride' - The initial encounter between yourself and the new fate you have chosen .
by 44 Image - Spreading the new mandate in your inner and outer worlds to announce the proposed marriage in ways that give the new fate the best chance of being accepted and becoming at least a working draft,

The trouble surrounding coupling with your new fate, is that the old fate is a tenacious tricky varmint and therefore acceptance and introduction of any new fate is never a foregone conclusion.

Just look at the words Karcher uses for each line 1-4 and getting the hang of what you need to do only becomes evident at around line 5 and this is why you can't just grasp this 'Lady of Fate' half heartedly or too roughly. New fates have to be worked for subtly: they require your concerted, resolute commitment and efforts tinged with a touch of inspiration to manifest a spark that can become a flame.

...of course there may be other interpretations that you speak to you louder.

Good Luck

Karcher has been life changing even with minimal exposure to him! mostly just read through his website but need to still get the book, thank you. I will order his book!

I really appreciate you responding. The addition of the sequence is helping me understand it better as well but I enjoy your thoughtful reply and in general it is helping to make it click for me.

When I see 44 I think of the ancient Chinese curse, “May you live in interesting times” as in “May you be surrounded by so many distractions that you can never focus on your true path.” The image for 44 is of wind blowing across the sky and the idea is that this is a time of looking all around, seeing all the possibilities while being careful not to make impulsive commitments or to get way laid or delayed by trivial distractions.

Resonance Journal could do that for you automatically! #shamelesssalespitch

Re: 44, I agree it's a really hard one. In your first reading you're trying to deal with 44 as a marrying maiden, someone who has little to no control over anything and who mostly just has to adapt. The many moving lines show this is a tricky situation to navigate (as you very well already know).

Line 5 seems to say opportunities will present themselves if you're alert for them. Notice and take advantage when you can.

In the meantime, probably try your best not to get too stressed out (line 1).

Lines 1 and 6 might be two different ways of combating the situation: mindless frantic struggle (line 1), and purposeful engagement (line 6). Line 6 uses its horns effectively; line 1 wears itself out. (But notice that what holds the pig back is golden. I remember getting this line about undesirable side effects of needed medicine; also about a coat that kept me warm, but I couldn't move in it and got a headache from being tense.)

Most likely all of this will be very hard work (line 3). Sorry, but that's what it says. It's part of the story of Yu, who worked so hard fighting the floods that he wasted away and didn't even see his own family for 10 years. That might not be exactly literal for you, but the spirit of it might be. Good news: he was successful because he embraced this. My pleasure.
You might also invest in Wilhelm as his interpretation gives a sobering balance after having walked in the heady world that is Karcher-land.

Not so much Karcher - like interpretations might be:

44 <> 54 Might be saying that the diagnostic of the situation is not to sell yourself short by going too fast.

48 <> 44 The advised action might be something like replenish the well so that it contains available, drinkable water otherwise you might not have the strength you need to face the challenges you are meeting. A clean well will keep you on your true course.

... of course other interpretations are available if these do not resonate with you.

Good Luck
