Potential relationship 32uc

Hi all,

I'm single and over the past few months have developed an interest in a guy working at a bookstore I sometimes go to, and it looks like he's noticing me too. That's just my feeling, as we've only exchanged words a couple of times.

Lately I've started going more often - just to see him! - but he wasn't there the last few times. Today I went and he was there, so after browsing a bit, I went to ask him a question about a book. He was friendly but quite shy, and as he replied, I saw he was blushing! I was surprised and found it cute and endearing.

So I was wondering wonder if there's any potential here as I'd like to get to know him more, but it's based only on a feeling that he's interested in me too.

My feeling about the reading is that it's good for me to keep going as I have been, initiating conversations and see what happens. Whatever happens, I'm following my feeling and moving toward making a connection, and I feel like whenever there's an opportunity for that in my life I should take it.

If so you could have written something like

'Karcher wrote in his book, 'Complete I Ching' xxxx

You need to say who you are quoting. Actually it doesn't sound much like Karcher.

If you want to use a certain translation in every post and not reference it each time you can put a note in your signature to say where you are taking translations from.

It's important to be aware 32uc can be just an indication of things going on as they have been. There are some real life experiences from a number of people in the thread below (there's a thread for experiences for every unchanging hexagram)

To me 32uc is nice and simple :D simple and straight forward. When I get it I know the matter in question is going to go on going on......whether I like it or not. I can recall a few occasions of receiving it where the thing in question has gone on for a very long time. Not necessarily...

So I agree with your interpretation and see this cast as auspicious however I don't think it automatically follows that things will develop from here . It could be the case you keep on going in the shop and you keep on having pleasant exchanges, it continues as it is. Your actual question is 'what will happen if I keep going to see him?' well then you keep going to see him, what then? At some point someone will need to break this continuing pattern or rather move it forward into something else. That is one of you will need to make some kind of suggestion otherwise you could keep on going there for years but not start going out together.

So while it is a very good answer in your shoes I might be asking the question 'what next?' and not automatically taking it that this answer says things will develop just perfectly. After all do you know yet if he is even single and available ?

For me, it's not so much about things just staying the same. 32 holds an element of choice and asks for appropriate action to ensure that what you have already gained remains. I agree with Trojina, too, when she says that it does not automatically follow that things will develop. The beauty of 32 lies in seeing something through in a consistent way and thereby ensuring that what you have already gained is not lost or diminished.

In my experience 32 unchanging points to something definitely long-lasting, but that effort and personal dedication are required to get things happen the way we wish. So I consider it a very positive hexagram, but it does not suggest that things will jsut "happen"; they will happen (and last) only if we really want to.

My feeling is that it's worth taking this step and investing in this possible connection. A nothing to lose kind of situation, even if 'Gathering' might not mean a relationship with this person.

But I don't feel like rushing into it, not sure if that's a 'slow and steady does it' feeling I get from the 32uc, or fear of rejection lol.

Because 'Blocked' could very much be about how I've let fear hold me back from taking the first step in this kind of situation before.

12.6 according to Wilhelm is "The standstill comes to an end. First standstill, then good fortune". So at present there is a standstill, but this standstill is meant to come to an end (Gathering). In fact, Wilhelm's interpretation adds: "One should not wish to make it permanent". To me, this sounds like an encouragement to go ahead. 45.6 in Wing's interpretation is "Any approach toward union will meet with rejection. This will bring you frustration because your intentions are misunderstood. Turn your attention inward instead, in order to penetrate the meaning of this disharmony. An inner accord with your Self will strengthen your position, and unity may become possible after all".

So the message of the Yi would be: go ahead, try to meet halfway this person; do not expect things to go smoothly from the beginning; ask yourself what you could do better to reach a union. Legge adds to "45": "A large sacrifice brings good fortune". This means that probably you need to sacrify something, this could be eg excessive expectation or as you hinted the fear of being rejected. But the message of the Yi is positive - it reiterates however that one should be honest with oneself and be determined to carry on despite the initial difficulties.

I feel like this reading is saying it's an opportunity I should grasp. These points you raised feel important to keep in mind: taking action to prevent the "standstill" becoming permanent; not expecting too much at first; and letting go of my fear of rejection so I can take this opportunity to connect with this person.

Whether a relationship starts or not, it feels like taking this opportunity is going to be good for me.

Update on 32uc:

So I gave him my phone number.. and then: nothing! No message lol.

But I think the important thing is that I took the chance. It's like I thought I was not the kind of person to take chances before, and now I know that I am.

It resonated in other areas too, like realising I had been passing up some good work-related opportunities.

A real change in pattern for me, so a very valuable experience. Also, having gained that clarity now, I can't lose it - maybe that's the 32uc Lasting.


And a footnote:
Right before I went there, I nearly chickened out, so I asked:

What will happen if I go to give him my phone number now?

14.1.3.6 > 40

These really resonated (from Hilary's translation on this site):

14 Great Possession
Line 3 "Small people are in no way capable of this"
I was very 'small' before, ie limited by fear

40 Release
"Which path leads you to where you want to be?"
I could see the path - don't ignore it, take that first step.
