Okay so the reading comes(online) and there are two hexagrams. What is the duration of time between these two different hexagrams? Between the first display and the last one, I mean. When is says changing to, how long before it changes?

The duration is something you have to find out by yourself by observing what happens.

It is seldom that you understand an I Ching answer at the very beginning (if you know all you wouldn't have asked).
Mostly the understanding of an answer develops with the time. Things happen, situations arouse and immediately you become able to correlate and identify what happens or what you are doing with the I Ching answer you have received.

There is no rule for time values. Also if sometimes the sentences contain date values (7 days, in eight months, ...) these values are mostly symbolical.

The only rule I have discovered is that if you have changing lines, these will be fulfilling one after the other bottom up.

And beware: the "resulting" sign will not always mean the resulting future. Often it's more a tonality of the main sign.

A casting (both hexagrams) characterizes the essence of a situation sub specie aeternitatis, so there is no duration. However, if the lines are interpreted as the stages of a process, or if the first hexagram is taken as the present and the second as the future, then there is a duration contingent on the situation. Thanks for the question.

I think you are asking about the relating hexagram considering it as the result ?
There are many here believe, included me, that the resulting hex can be the context of a situation facing or what you need to achieve or both. I personally jump from hex to hex to see how it applies to my situation.

As for duration, I don't feel there is one answer. I agree , it depends on the situation. Have been thinking about it recently, when asking for a seminal that was a great opportunity to attend, but money wise was almost a suicide. Asking how to proceed got hex 13 which made me go to a Facebook group I belong around the theme of the seminar to ask advise. By puse luck, found a member, being in the area and informed me she could attend to some more affordable presentations. Had some reading after that for using that option and all where favorable, but the last one perplexed me, as was very negative. It turn out there was a last minute cancellation so couldn't attend.

As a problem can be broken down to subproblems/routines, the casting could refer to that subproblems or to the whole issue.... I can't tell..
