I am wondering if others have seen this treatment of the 'lines' by Gregory Whincup. I am finding it quite useful.

Add up values of lines, take from 55, count from bottom line up to top line with remaining total, counting top line twice, then come down again if number exceeds 7 and rest on the count down. THAT is the line that must be given attention. But if that line is not moving, then read hexagrams as a whole (so all lines change as before), if line does move, that is the one you want!

I can explain more if anyone wants.

It is a bit complex, but gives me confidence. (in same way perhaps as some who use yarrow sticks feel more confident, and the more difficult a task, the greater the feeling of value.....)?

Hi Nemean:

I don´t understand too much. Might you post some step by step demostration of the method?
Maybe quoting the Wincup´s rendering of the implied hexagrams?

Thanks in advance.

All the best,

Charly

I guess this is the source (?): http://www.biroco.com/yijing/Shih-chuan_Chen.pdf

A critical point of view to this ie socalled Nanjing-rule: http://www.russellcottrell.com/VirtualYarrowStalks/NanjingiRules.htm

[Richard Rutt mention it in "Zhouyi - the book of changes", Routledge, 2002, Part I, Divination, Selecting the oracle, Nanjingrules for oracle selection.]

I'm still "testing it" since I first time met it in this book and haven't still found whether it actually was the method used then....
