My very good friend has a lovely dog, Holly, a Shepherd mix, who was diagnosed with lymphoma about a month ago. Friend, who has beaten cancer herself, decided to treat Holly's cancer "aggressively," a decision echoed by her daughter, who happens to be a veterinarian. So Holly had strong cancer drugs.

You get the picture. All the best for Holly Dog. Plus, we took Holly to a healing service last weekend where a team of psychic healers worked on her. The dog seemed happy and reasonably healthy at the time. Friend and I were very optimistic that Holly would make a full recovery.

In spite of all of this, Holly's condition worsened, and two nights ago, Sunday night, friend drove her 100 miles through a thunder storm to the critical care unit at the Veterinarian College at the state university. At that point, I asked Y:

Please show me a picture of Holly's health:
26.1.2.6 > 15

I found reasons to hope in these hexagrams, but Holly was so very ill, with no chance of recovery, that they had to put her down last night.

Does anyone see that sad outcome in these hexagrams?

From whose POV is it a sad outcome ? Yours or the dog's ? I've heard 26.6 come up for death before...heavens highway...no stopping it...when your time is up it's up. 15 asks for realism I think.

I doubt the dog is very sad...not with this cast....that dog is flying man

26.6 can be the unstoppable roll of life...and if you live you gotta die...If it's time to go no amount of chemicals or healing is going to stop it...it's not controllable...it's heaven's highway after all..

maybe... I'd say that depends on how you see death... in this case there was massive force working (the therapy and the strong will to turn something around... and it was fighting the powers of nature so hard that “the axle fell from the wheel“, everything fell about because of those two opposing forces... 26.1 and 2 ... but to get rid of this struggle of forces inside there is always a way left open ... 26.6 ... finally Holly is whole and safe again... nature took care to complete what was not fulfilled...
For you and your friend her death was sad, a tragedy, naturally.... but for Holly it was simply the way to complete the circle, her circle... like death is the natural end of life

That is, the yin house or grave. Not just the casting but also the situation and tone of the presentation are heavy with grief. Plenty of signs.

Heaven's Highway

Yes, thanks Trojina, I hope Holly is happy on the Heavenly Highway now, but her "owner" and her family are not, and neither am I.

Hope I don't get 26.6 phobic now, I was trying to read it as the one hopeful line, as though Holly would be returned in one piece to her heavenly life in the country with a family who loves her.

Bradford's 26.1 also explicitly warns, perhaps against too many drugs:
26.1, 1st 9, Zhi Gua 18: Gu, Detoxifying
This will get harsh
Worthwhile to quit

But followed by "success," which I found confusing.

Thanks so much, oileanach. The dynamic between medicine and disease does make sense. Through your compassionate eyes, the circle takes on meaning; I think our sadness makes sense as well.

Thanks so much. Your method is truly amazing, pocossin. Perhaps less amazing as I learn to see.

My friend has lost her mother, a good friend, and now her dog within three months. "Heavy with grief" describes the entire situation.

Hexagram 15 is about a superior person bringing things to a practical conclusion, hence putting down the dog to end it's misery.
