Hey. New to the site so I am welcoming any pointers..
I use the Richard Wilhelm translation, and use yarrow stalks.
( been really happy with it - I thank both the book and the yarrow after every reading :bows: )

my Question was:
Should I eat sushi?
-I recently became a vegetarian. I did this for many reasons, but mainly the idea of us humans no longer running just off of instincts and now we have quite a lot of brain power to decide and think about what we eat. ... and I watched this lobster go in boiling water.. that is what sparked a light. ANYWAYS...
-I slipped and ate some sushi with a friend. I told myself that maybe I would JUST eat sushi and that is it.. no other meat.

my Answer was:
50 (with nine in the 4th place) changing to 18

I am having a hard time stepping back and figuring what this means...
I would like some help but only from people that can step out of their opinion of vegetarianism.

Thanks for listening

I'm sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

You've said that you use Wilhelm's translation. On the commentary of this line 50.4:

A man has a difficult and responsible task to which he is not adequate. Moreover, he does not devote himself to it with all his strength but goes about with inferior people; therfore the execution of the work fails.

Your desire to be vegetarian is a noble one. I think that the yi is telling you that you cannot pick and choose the conditions though. Maybe hang out with some other people who are vegetarian when you go eating and you won't be led into the temptation. Hex 18 says you can work on it - don't just give up.

Thanks Nicky_p :bows:

It is as if it is telling me what has already happened though. It told me that I "slipped up".

But I did it conscientiously. I had decided before the restaurant that I would just be a sushi eater and nothing else...

then I felt wrong about it, but I like sushi so much.. So I busted out the I ching!

I want to say that hexagram 18 is saying I shouldn't eat sushi, and I can work on strengthening my willpower that was spoiled.

Do you use only Wilhelm? and do you use yarrow or coins or both?

yeah, that's what I see as well - not because I think the yi has any opinion on vegetarianism or any other way of life as such but that it does not agree with the spirit in which you decided to be a vegetarian.

I use Wilhelm, LiSe's site: www.yijing.nl, Bradford's translation which can be downloaded from www.hermetica.info and a commentary by Brian Browne Walker. I don't necessarily use all at once :)

I've never been able to get hold of yarrow sticks so I use coins or Hilary's flash reading on the site.

Realised that might sound a bit wierd - I didn't explain myself very well, sorry

I just meant that I thought that the yi was commenting on your opinion of vegetarianism and not vegetarianism itself. Like 'if you're gonna do this do it whole-heartedly and not change bits just because you like sushi' ;)

Bit annoying when the logical arguments our minds make to find loopholes just don't sit right somewhere, huh?

Good luck
:)

That SERIOUSLY was my initial thought. Like,...
don't half do it.
Follow thru with what you are doing even tho you botched it up once.
(my caldron fell over, but it can be put back on its legs)

I'm not looking back. I am never eating sushi again!
