I am so grateful whenever anyone helps me(and others) here to understand the Ching. I keep reading, but get only a glimmer of clarity, but often get full clarity when I pursue others' posting for glimmers of
full clarity in answers to their postings.
Anyway, I asked these 2 Q; 1). What kind of work is best suited for my son(he's 23, laid off from the gas station and only has a high school diploma) and received this 45, Gathering Together, ist line
Q: 2). Is my son ever going to find a permanent girlfriiend? received this: 17 following, no changing lines both primary and secondary hex.
I think the answer to the second Q may pertain to the fact that he may find a girlfriend because it said following, but I'm not certain if this is what is meant by this. As for the 1st Q, I haven't a clue.
My husband and I are very concerned because my husbands' health isn't too good and he and I would like to see some permanent progress in our sons' life for our son's own future in case my husband would not be around forever. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks

Hi Candida,

speaking generally, both 45 and 17 reflect a focus on belief systems, 45 celebrates, 17 instigates.

in the binary sequence 45 pairs with 12, the common theme being a positive attitude to 'higher' things, 45 celebrates, 12 protects in that it represents the neutralisation of attacks on one's belief and so the strengthening of that belief (as does celebration strengthen).

Interpretations of the IC often give 12 as 'stagnation' etc but that is due to the underlying nature that rejects change - a 'no no' to the I Ching which is about change! ;-)

The eranos text gives the name of 12 as:

"PI : closed, stopped; bar the way; obstacle; unfortunate, wicked; refuse, disapprove, deny. The ideogram: mouth and not, blocked communication"

I think you can see in this the focus on rejecting change but the cooperative perspective is on defending one's belief system through neutralising attacks. Hex 11 is also about balance but is more positive re change, it reflects harmony as potentials.

In the binary system 45 is opposed by 26 - holding firm to traditions etc.

In the traditional sequence 45 pairs with 46, 46 focuses on becoming more entangled, a focus on 'pushing upwards' and as such both reflect relationships with 'higher' authority.

Some questions:

(1) would you interpret the general nature of your son as someone focused on values or on facts?

(2) would you interpret him as being focused on what was/is/will be or more on what could have been/is not/ could be?

(3) would you interpret his general character as reactive (responding to things) or proactive (as in instigating things)?

Chris.

Hi Candida,

The first question resulted in a relating hexagram of 17. Since this was your (unmoving) answer to your second question, there's a common thread which relates to your son's future.

45 suggests that your son gather his resources. It may be surprising to see just how useful some of his experience may be to a future vocation. For example, is he outgoing? Is he analytical in any way? What we're talking about here are his aptitudes. Does he demonstrate ambition and enthusiasm for his work? Is he a natural leader? Does he do well with teams? Or, does he do better working by himself?

17 speaks to the need for him to be adaptable. If he is to be a leader of a family, a husband and father, or just of his own life, he will need to learn how to follow. This also means to follow instructions or orders from his work supervisors, if he is to provide an economic base for his future family.

17 requires some thought, some gathering, and therefore requires rest. This is a time for pondering his potential.

Best to you and yours.
