Your answer says its up to you. Think it through and make a reasoned decision. The Yi is telling you to think it out and make the decision for yourself here in line 5 hex 20.

Theres no scolding, its just up to you, plain and simple, in my view :)

Hex 20.2 this suggests that you open up your viewpoint and see the bigger picture, so don't restrict yourself, use the full potential that you possess and carry on. Everyone has problems, you just have to sort them out and not give in to them.

Hex 20.5 you have a responsibility and obligation to others to carry on, would keep studying produce a positive outcome for your family, do they want you to carry on with your studies? If so, then stick with it.

Hex 4 says you are acting a bit silly, so go listen to your tutor, learn and study hard.

I don't see hex 20 is telling you to continue with study, I think it suggest you contemplate the issue yourself and perhaps from a broader perspective. I can't see anything in hex 20 to suggest you have an obligation to others ?

Agreeing with Trojan here. I don't see the I Ching as scolding you at all, rather it seems to be saying you are under no obligation to continue with the studies and that you should look around and get a stronger sence of where you want to go with your life.

20.2 Suggests the need for a broader outlook. Perhaps your studies are difficult now because they don't relate to anything in your actual experience. Or is navigating getting out of the house and off to school, dealing with all the personalities etc. a bit daunting?
20.5 Look at your true interests and life goals. Are these studies preparing you for something you really want to do?

Hexagram 4 without change lines simply discribes a new student.

In sum, it seems to me the I Ching is saying your hesitation is caused by your being unfamiliar with the school and the subject, and is not necessarily a sign that you should or should not continue. Consider deeply if this course of study will indeed prepare you for what you want in life. If the answer is yes, than it appears there are no external obstacles blocking your progress.

Hex 20.5, the ruling line says so, it says that he should consider how his actions, in this case to stay on or quit studying, affects others. The others in this case would be his family and I am sure that they would want him to carry on studying. It goes on to say that if staying the course pleases his family then he has an obligation to them, to carry on, so when he looks at his situation and sees that staying at college pleases them, then that is what he should do. This is not just about him here, it is also about others and how his final decision affects them, he is living with others.

Agreeing with Willowfox that 20.5 encourages one to consider how their actions will effect those who come after. We are all role models. What 20.5 DOESN"T say is what Tanjhi necessarily should do in this position. If one stays in school for the wrong reasons what kind of message does that send? Tanjhi, are you thinking of dropping out because you're bored and want to party? Or because you realize you're not getting anything out of the experience and that your time would be better invested elsewhere? If everyone were to do what you are now doing would we be better for it? Perhaps you should ask some more questions.

Hi

Just in case the comment could be useful

20 is not a time for drop a process, but to focus on carry on it until it's fulfillment: "The ablution has been made, but not yet the offering"

Besides, both the image of 20 and the core of 4 are related to teachers and students.

If you are facing troubles, don't drop the course but seek for the cause and the solution within yourself.

Best wishes

I don't see 20.5 as saying you have obligation to others, only that you can assess your current course of action/behavior by the effect you have on the world around you.

To me, this reading says to look at what you are doing from the broad overview. You are in a course of study where perhaps who you are and what you contibute are/will be of value to others? or maybe not.....YOU are capable of assessing this. Is it true or not? In your heart you know
Line 2 says to not be timid, act with courage, don't be afraid to acknowledge your worthiness for this...Or to acknowledge the reasons why you might not want to continue. Don't be afraid to honor your truest feelings.
4 simply says you are a student , learning.

Interesting. Never saw line 2 in that light before.

I think I can see how WF gets 'for others' from this reading. The contrast is between the selfish interest of line 2 (limited, narrow, inside looking out), and broader outlook of line 5, where ones own contribution to the world (others) sets an example and gives them inspiration. It's all about perspective or outlook. And then it's about making choices based on that perspective.

After giving this further thoughts, it occurs to me that 20.2 can be the lower self, or where you feel you are now, uncertain as to whether to go further with your studies, and not having the experience to know if your reasons for staying or dropping out are valid. 20.5 then can represent the higher self, the self you would like to be, a self that IS able to look widely in all directions and know if ones choices are wise or foolish. So I think the I Ching is urging you to look around, look at the people you know who have completed this course, look at people who dropped out. Ask questions. rise up from being 20.2 to 20.5. In other words, it seems the I Ching is urging that what is important here is that you make an informed decision.
