Hello!

I'm currently studing Graphic Design, and loving it, but there is an opportunity for me to do a Certificate IV in textile design (which I would do at night over a few years).

Sadly it is not possible for me to do an elective in Textile Design in the current university I'm studying with, and while I'm happy with the course I am doing textile design is something I'm quite interested in and a subject I actually love. Drooling over textile patterns or forms is quite a usual occurance for me! Ha! Textile design is part of Industrial Design, and so skills in this would also work in well in terms of my Graphic Design career.

I asked the I Ching: What would be the outcome of doing the Certificate IV in textile design at x?
18:2,6 > 15

I found this interesting because a year or so ago I asked the I ching about studying graphic design and got 18.2 > 52

To fix what was created by "the mother". It is true, I was not properly cared for when I was young or a teenager - and I don't really have a "motherly" or parental figure in my life, although my mother is that to many other people. As an adult, I've accepted that parents do the best they can - I've let any resentment from that lack of care go.

I think moving into the artistic/creative field was not possible for me as a young person due to this lack of care and support, and by doing this now I will be fixing something that is quite ingrained in our family: Higher education is not favourably regarded, and as rather "salt of the earth" people art is seen as frivolous beyond high school.

Overall, I think that this is a positive reading though and that I should follow this opportunity. What do you think?

Yi is noting your lack of constancy (Line 2), or perhaps noting that you might not be able to finish the textile program due to lack of funds. However, Line 6 is sort of a "get out of jail free card" as long as you follow the highest aspiration, whatever that is, whether it leads to money or honour (kings or lords), and whether or not authority figures agree. "Honor what is highest", whatever that is in your case. The outcome itself is likely to be a modest one, but one with integrity (H15).

Hi Tiger,

I don't believe I have been inconsistant - I've worked very hard for a number of years towards the goal of getting skills in graphic design (working and studying at the same time has meant I don't do ANYTHING other than those two things - but I'm happy).

I certainly get your point about money - although I think rather there could be problems in terms of my time. Next year will be easier as I will just be studying, so I will have more time to devote to studies, but as this course will be extra work I may find things difficult time-wise.

But it could be so much fun :)

Given that you have asked about the outcome going forward, the most likely meaning is "What is started is not sustainable." Why? Maybe money, energy, lack of overall planning...anyway, that is Yi's take, not any value judgement of mine. Study it and think about it.

I generally believe that Line 6 would be the go ahead to follow your heart, even if you do end up unable to finish. I would ask myself "what is my highest aspiration" and think on that as well, and try to follow that. Your highest aspiration may be (or may not be) to gratify your current urge and go for the textile design. Only you can answer that.
