It could be the emperor’s prayer
for rescue from the heathen over the border,
the last gasp of a warrior,
the tender caress of a lover,
the dulcet whisper in the ear of a prostitute,
a cough raising discharge
onto a mirror,
the suck of desire,
an octave below the string
which carries sympathy
to a minor imbibing froth on a pond

all contending

all forming
before I have to choose the scribe,
the amanuensis or the ink

the carved,
the carver
or the block

the captive,
the gaoler
or the rush of air above their heads

and assume I can’t be everyone,
everywhere,
everything

although at times I wish I could be

to displace my doubt
I have anything important to say.
