I like the cloud of nuance available through the English word Diversion which places two very different entities, tending in different directions, Frank

I listed both divergence and diversity among my key words, and I think a grasp of the value of diversity is vital to understanding the meaning of the Gua (and the health of ecosystems). I'm just not certain that it would be a precise translation of Kui though. To translate the word literally leaves it up to the reader to grasp the more positive side of the term - which is a device used a lot by the authors (in Decrease for instance).

38.M, Key Words
Divergence, dissociation, disparity, dissonance, dissention, discord, contradiction
Polarization, parting of ways, ambivalence, tension, stress; odd, crafty, perverse
Uniqueness, diversity, contrast, standing out, sticking out, separation, strangeness
To stare, squint as if disbelieving, be astonished; individual nature, distinctiveness
Separateness, aloneness, alienation, incongruity; to stand alone, agree to disagree
Detachment, isolation, aloneness; emphasis, articulation, stress as in highlighting
38.G, From the Glossary
kui2 (to be) estranged, separated, distant, weird, dissociated, divergent, foreign
alien, separate(d), removed, polarized, contrary, unusual, strange, opposed, in
opposition, diametrically opposed; (a, the) disparity, estrangement, separation,
polarity; eyes not aligned, moving separately

Tries real hard picturing Topal as a Nazi.... :brickwall:

It means nothing. Frank accused me of some of the same stuff he accused Topal of. He sees Nazis and Cathars behind every hexagram.

Hi Bradford,
There is a bit of difference between diversion and the keywords you list so plentifully. Diversion is also a pun upon entertainment (it was a diverting evening of theater, in the sense of diverting attention from the salt mines of one's labors) and carrying things away from their proper course (the canal was a diversion of basic river water flow).

Applied to hex 38 with the image of two younger daughters (caught inside by a rainy day, and therefore making mischief to express their sibling rivalry and entertain themselves at the sister's expense.

The Taoist translation works hard to describe things without moral judgment. Not estrangement, not the inherent distinction between fire that tends upward and the Lake that also tends upward, but if you put a flaming raft upon a Lake they don't get into each other's way.

The other recent posts are clearly diversions in many ways.

Ever ponder why the Junzi is left out of 08, 16, 20, 21, 24, 25 & 59
in favor of the Xian Wang? And out of 11 & 44 for the Hou?

It might be a fun exercise to derive ethical lessons from the Ba Gua for the
Junzi in these cases.
I pondered and reached this result:

8-16-20-21-24-25-59 are about persons in charge, Xian Wang, the Kings of ancient times.

11-44 are too about persons in charge, but the subjects Piece and Coming to Meet aren't suited to
an overall ruler as a Zhou dynasty King, so Hou, Marquis, was used instead.

1.3-2-3.3-9.6-12-13-15-15.1-15.3-20.1-20.5-20.6-23.6-33.4-34.3-36.1-40.5-43.3-49.6-64.5 are about persons
not in charge and junzi is used.

7.6-10.3 are about a person in charge, a general but not the King, and Da Jun is used.

I can't see, why Da Jun too is used in 19.5, but the above may be the explanation why?

beautifull work LiSe,

perhaps you could consider with hex 6: the Junzi mediates and is considerate (or something like that). Every translation and interpretations is a creative act, so why not adding something? We are here to understand and makeing the YI alive, not only to build with ancient bricks, but also to make new ones.
