Hello,

like so many others, I am deeply shocked and depressed about the Russian Invasion by Madman and Psychopath Putin into the Ukraine.

I wish there were more things that I personally could do to support the Ukrainian people and their government...well there are a couple of things that I think everyone can do and which can make a change when cumulated:

1) Go to pro-Ukrainian demos in your city as often as possible. This will not bother Putins criminal regime, but it can put pressure on your local governement so they see that people want them to DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS.

2) Petition your local government with letters urging them to increase their support for the Ukraine, be it with a closing of the sky over Ukraine, sending military / humanitary aid (whatever you feel is the appropriate here). Most high-ranking politicians have email addresses for members of the public to send their concerns to. I have had no problems at all to find the email addresses for the German chancellor, the German minister of foreign affairs and the Bavarian Minister president. While they are unlikely to read your messages, I think that the cumulative effect of getting thousands of mails in suport of the Ukraine will have an effect!

3) Save Energy. Every liter of gas and oil that does not get burned here is another Euro that we don't pay to Russia and that is not avialable for this invasion that is a breach of everything that is human, civilized or right. For every person it is a small impact, but if many do it, the impact increases. So turn on heating only when you feel cold and not out of habit, think of running errands by public transport instead of the car, or even try walking or biking shorter distances. In addition to saving fuel, you will also be healthier.

4) Support local refugee organisations that welcome Ukrainian refugees. The people that fight for their (and our) freedom deserve to see their wives and children in a safe and good environment.

5) ??? There are probably more ideas that can be put into practice and that I did not think about. Feel free to add to this list whatever YOU think will be helpful to end this war!

best wishes

Annette

Hey Trojina, as soon as I opened this thread, my anti-virus program flashed a red warning and told me it had aborted the connection to Play for Ukraine, which it described as a security threat. I'm not sure why it would do that before I even clicked on the link, but it did. It could be just that it identified it as a denial-of-service attack program, which is what it's meant to be. In a lot of jurisdictions, particularly in the US, that is totally illegal. And as we all know, the Americans don't pull any punches when it comes to punishing people who knowingly play around with viruses. I imagine it's unlikely that anyone would be prosecuted, and I sympathize with people trying to show their support. But people need to be aware of what they are getting into with it.

Remember Gary McKinnon? He probably had good intentions, too.

Another idea - if there are any Ukrainian churches near you, maybe they're accepting donations or help in some way. There's one near me whose website is set up to take online donations.

Hi Liselle,

these are lovely ideas, thank you for posting them!

I had heard of the AirBnB initiative, but the knitting patterns were new to me, that is another good idea to show support.

Also the idea with the Ukrainian churches is very good - in my hometown the Ukrainian-Greek Orthodox church is very active in helping both the refugees coming to Germany and the people still in Ukraine or Poland.

thanks

Annette

There are probably lots of things besides knitting patterns to buy online in a similar way. Music (downloadable mp3s), supporting people's Patreons...

A small thing I noticed when I was looking at the one lady's Etsy shop is she had a note she's not able to take new orders for physical things for obvious reasons. But anything that's purely electronic works.

Not to be negative, but it occurred to me anyone can claim to be from anywhere on the internet. No one wants to be scammed by someone claiming to be Ukrainian when they're actually from California. It might help to glance through their social media to see if it all seems consistent farther back than the last few weeks.
