This just seems a bit odd to me - 10 changing to 9, lines 3 & 4

Hi there,
Having decided to expand my social life to involve new friends - which is arguably difficult considering the shifts I work - I decided to ask "what are my best options for making new friends?" I want to point out that I do socialise with good friends with whom I do share common interests, but lately I am feeling the need to encompass a broader perspective on all things, and involve myself with, I don't know, just some new outlooks on life also. For some reason, it's important for me to do so, and I have been feeling this way for some time.
Well. Somehow I managed hexagram 10, (lines 3 & 4 if I've got it right )- changing to hexagram 9.
Not being particularly adept at reading at this stage - being new to the I-Ching - it seemed like quite a heavy sort of answer for something I had envisioned as being reasonably straightforward and matter of fact!
I'd really appreciate some angles on this from you folks, thank you.
cheers, kiwigal

It suggests that you think more carefully about what you actually want before making a move as you are plainly not ready for this move forward, when you are indeed ready, and you will know, then go ahead.

Hi Kiwi Gal,

Hexagram 10 is a gentle hexagram about the Lake under the Sunshine or the youngest daughter following her father's footsteps and being adorable. The strange line judgment commentary on line 3 arises from the image of the yin line in the third place filling in or closing thus a mouth biting.

Fortune teller judgments "that you are not ready for this move forward" are ultimately silly and have no basis in your Yi Oracle.

I prefer to interpret the Yi from just the objective line structures and let the ancient Chinese text about interpreter meditations upon the line changes or fortune telling projections fall by the wayside.

Hexagram 10 has five Yang lines, with only the 3rd line place of personal passion being Yin. This represents a symbolism of process without a focus upon personal passion.
The third and fourth line places are the heart line pair. Yang over Yin in that line pair symbolizes your heart questioning. Your oracle of hex 10.3,4 symbolizes a focus upon the heart line pair changing to Yin over Yang, where the process remains with 5 Yang lines, but the open Yin line is now in the fourth place or the feelings of the heart. This is the Heart seeking or pushing.

You ask for advice from the Yi Oracle on how to expand your social circle, activities and outlook. The response suggests that you focus upon what you want or your personal passions or motivating interests (line 3) and relax your expectations or open your heart to offer opportunity for new feelings. The result of this change would then make you clearer what you want and more open about what is available from others with the result that you would be moving your living process from what has accumulated up to the point (the notion of a lake absorbing the local streams) toward the new possibilities, the open field or weather patterns bringing clouds that might grow to rain for the fields of crops. Rain was a big deal to ancient Chinese farmers and the weather patterns often brought clouds but no rain as the crops languished.

It is a lovely Yi Oracle, poetic in its counsel. Also it suggests it may be more of an issue to change your emotional focus than needing to necessarily finding new situations or people. Clearly you are ready to move forward and the Yi describes how you can do that. Fortune tellers mistake the words for the meaning, taking a tiger bite as bad. However, even in the Wilhelm the line ends with thus does the warrior for the great prince. It is all about courage to face new situations even possible rejection or other biting reactions from the sharp mouths around. Also, line 4 notes that one needs care and circumspection, but moving forward leads to good fortune.

Good Luck with your next steps.

Hi Kiwi Gal,

Fortune teller judgments "that you are not ready for this move forward" are ultimately silly and have no basis in your Yi Oracle.

You may think that you are wise and all knowing just because you wrote a book 30 years ago which was certainly not a best seller, in fact it was rubbish, and has since disappeared forever. You seem intent on belittling me for some unknown reason, in the past few days you have unleashed a relentless attack upon me. Your answers are just long winded diatribes that basically say the same thing but only with a lot more padding and fake superiority?

actually, both of these interpretations above ring true, and together they say a lot. togethr.
Frank takes it deeper and looks at the nuances.

i see the oracle as gently reflecting back to you what you describe. your desire to expand your social circle has been building in you, as dense clouds gather before the rain. hex 10 describes being tentative, perhaps emphasizing the difficulties you perceive in finding the right way to branch out given your shifts at work, and also the difficulties, or natural discomfort when attempting something new like this. There are always risks when we make a move like this, and reaching out socially can be awkward and uncertain.

Since your question was "what are my best options for making new friends" I would interpret the answer to say that you need to take a bit of a risk, and that it will work out well. Respect the timing, and move forward when you feel ready. the rain comes. you will be pushed forward by your yearnng. let your intuition guide you. a chance meeting, a certain feeling to go to such and such an event, a serendipitous invitation...these can all be part of the hex 9 atmosphere.

all the best!

Hi Bamboo,

I agree with your interpretation of the Oracle advice,(and you are very kind to include a kind view of a fortune teller's judgment: "go away and wait till you are better or at least more interesting to me"--there is an entire thread in Open space on her rants and posts that went so far off mark as to have to be deleted).

And, yes, I agree making changes, especially involving meeting new people, requires taking risks including meeting some people who reject you or make strange comments about your efforts.

The change of heart (line pair) in this oracle also indicates how to achieve that new attitude within--change a questioning heart to a seeking heart--- and the results that follow...no longer stuck in a static place reacting to what flows to you from the fixed structure of her environment, moving on to the free flight as a cloud looking for an open field to develop.

It appears that you are no longer content to confine your attacks, rudeness and insults to the Open space thread, you now want to cause upheaval in the Shared reading section as well. For someone of your "supposed" superiority why do you find it necessary to mock, lie and exaggerate?
You are trying everyway possible to destroy my credibility on this site for your own personal satisfaction, nothing more, but it is you that is the phony, trying to make out that you are indeed somebody special and superior.
You call me a terrorist but who do you think you are, carrying out a propaganda war against me?

Disagreeing and offering different interpretations is welcome, and absolutely within the scope of this forum. Advocating different approaches/ methods and offering up the results for people to try is good, too. It would be best to do this in a simple and direct way: something along the lines of 'I disagree with WF's interpretation because in my view the line structures mean xyz, and I find that's more reliable than reading the text' would be fine.

Please try to confine the personal stuff to Open Space, though, and let the readings speak for themselves.

Hi Kiwigal!
I'm reading 10.3.4>9. as the I Ching encouraging you to simply go up to people and introduce yourself. At first you should pause and consider your best approach (10.3) and then just take a chance and say "Hi!". This will lead "ultimately to good fortune " (10.4), especially if you don't come on too strong (9).

Hi Rosada,
Of course there is the difficult part of hex 10.3 and the misfortune of stepping on the tiger's tail and getting bitten. Bad reactions also can occur as one moves to open up, as has been demonstrated in this very thread, so one needs to take the attitude of a warrior of the heart-- on a quest for one's heart's desire-- and face the slings and arrows of outrageous whatever as part of the adventure.
