In my small meager 20 years of consulting the i ching (on and off)
when i was 21 or around this age i tried using the yarrow sticks of which i bought from a paticular shop

Now how would some advice to pick up the these objects and to place in what part of the hand or in which hand for that matter, this is why i stuck to whilem as the coins are used more in the common place as this is where i feel i belong,,always common as in hexagram 49 i think would explain my my soul,,example castro who loves change but really doest like things to change

This site is trully amazing is such contrast of male and female thoughts
but one thing is consistent is that an ego can be so damaging and learning to let go of this you can trully be on your way to be pure
I mean did jesus have an ego,,i dont think so, i know buddah does not

So in consulting the Yi if you have no coins (in poverty) i know this is sacred and sometimes personal

Is it still 6 and 9 are there any simple methods , as like some others here i like things to not to be to complicated and to get a clear and simple result.
Not to be muddled in the past as i feel that is not what this oracle is about or though as i mentioned , the male side is hard and strong in (1) and hard to let go of

I dated i a chinese girl from singapore and i was doing well at the time finacilly
I got drunk one night ,and lost her, then she retured, then she left
She said to me if u break a porcealin vase can u put this back together
and me being irish decent " i said of coz u can"

and she SAID QUIETLY will it ever look the same

Steve, could you clarify what you're asking? :) Are you looking for simpler ways of casting a hexagram, or yarrow stalk instructions, or ...?

It's ok to have an ego, I see it as an unfortunate but necessary extension of the human body.

I took mine out back behind the shed and shot it, but it's still half-alive and I gotta feed it from time to time. ;)

Yes - the ego's kind of useful if you want to know who you're looking at in the mirror, anyway.

About the yarrow method - I just came across this set of instructions with photos. They have one weird quirk, as Harmen points out in the comments - setting aside two stalks at the outside instead of the usual one. But still, there are photos. (I only have instructions without photos, and with a simpler way of counting.)

Steve--
The Yarrow stalk method depends upon having a bundle of stalks whose total active number is divisible by 4 (50-2 or 50-1 then another one put aside) which are then divided into two sets. If the bundle was divided evenly--the sets are both divisible by 4--it is a 2 if not it is a 3. Done three times with an ever smaller bundle though still divisible by 4, and the 3 sets of results (2 or 3) added together to get the same set of number results as coins with the possible values being 6,7,8, or 9.
The rest of the ritual is a matter of various traditions, but ultimately you are getting your result from splitting the bundle either into sets divisible by 4 or not.

 Look out! Here comes the evil thread resuscitator! :p

About the yarrow method - I just came across this set of instructions with photos. They have one weird quirk, as Harmen points out in the comments - setting aside two stalks at the outside instead of the usual one.

Setting aside two stalks instead of one, that is, starting the procedure with 48 stalks instead of the usual 49, makes a BIG difference indeed. It leads to two practical consequences:

1. You will never get 9, nor 5, as a result of counting (unless, of course, you make some mistake! :D), only 4 or 8 all of the three times, and always including that single stalk taken from the right hand heap and held between the little finger and ring finger of your left hand (points 3 and 7 of Hilary's instructions). So the whole process is a little bit simplified. But...

2. The probabilities of getting each kind of line become the same as those of the three coins method!
So this is what I call the heretic yarrow method. :D
I discovered it by myself, just because I feel more comfortable with symmetric probabilities, but nevertheless I don't want to give up - absolutely! - that stronger feel of connection given by the elaborated yarrow stalks rite.
I was sure that someone else had to be already using it from years, and I'm glad to see the proof of it, but... they'd better acknowledge it for what it is! ;)

I Ching clarified by Mondo Secter has detailed instructions in it, too.
I use bundles of popsicle stix from the dollar store. They even come in packs of 50. It takes a little practice and concentration. But it's kind of cool, the ritual and the evolution of the gram. It helps in particular with being focused and holding the question in comtemplation through out.
