Hello everyone,

A few years ago I sold the home I had been living in to move in with my elderly mother in her home, in the same city, in order to provide her round-the-clock care. Sadly, she passed away a year ago and I am now needing to decide whether I will purchase her home from my siblings or sell the home with them and buy my own property in the same city. While this family home is comfortable and in a decent area, I am feeling a bit "stuck" in this home that I do not fully own, and a large part of me is anxious to once again be settled in my own space with a fresh start.

I have been looking at potential properties in my area and found one that I liked and asked the I Ching: "What Can I Expect if Purchase _____(name of property). I received Hexagram 40.2.4 changing to Hex 2.

My first reaction upon reading the hexagram is that purchasing this lovely property may finally release me from any constraining and unpleasant ties with my siblings and provide the freedom to move on and rebuild my own home and, by extension, my own life. But in reading Hillary's essay on Hex 40, it seems to be saying to let things take their time--to let things flow naturally and to asses where the decision to buy the home might take me and choose accordingly. As it relates to Hexagram 2, might it be saying to get to work and move forward? They seem to be contradictory.

I would greatly appreciate any assistance in interpreting this reading.

Thank you so much!

Hello Sicula888, I'm not an expert like many other people here, but I thought I would try and give you my two cents. Hexagram 40.2.4 suggests that purchasing the new property may come with some difficulties or obstacles. So I think it's important to thoroughly investigate the property and make sure there are no hidden problems that may arise in the future. This hexagram also suggests that maybe you will have to make some sacrifices or compromise something in order to successfully acquire the property.

The resulting hexagram might just reflect your feeling that this property could bring you a sense of peace and stability, that it may be a good investment and provide you with a solid foundation to build your new life upon.

Overall, I think the iching is advising to be patient but also persistent in your pursuit of a property, which doesn't have to be necesserally this one.

'Relief' through 'Responding'

If you purchase this property you can expect your situation to be one where you will feel more empowered, nourished and nurtured and so better able to support a new life for yourself and others (2).
You can expect that it will be a relief for you as you will leave behind all the memories and associations (negative?) that you have about your current home (40).

40.2 - Stay centred and be dynamic in your approach and attitude. In this way, you will overcome the forces that are acting to keep you trapped where you are: mentally, emotionally and physically.

40.4 - Proceed in the way that you believe is right for you. The sooner you start with the actions that are necessary, the sooner momentum will gather to make your wishes come true.

... or you might find other interpretations that have more meaning for you.

Good Luck

Thank you, Misswasabi, your interpretation captures my hesitancy about this property. I appreciate the thoughtful response.

my_key, I felt this property would have provided the benefits that you mention: empowerment, nourishment, a sense of moving on with my life, a new community of neighbors, and a fresh start. However, there were some concerns. I took it upon myself to research the property thoroughly and I noted that there is a less than visible railroad track that runs at the end of the street (about 7 houses away). While the train does not pass often, it was enough of a concern, coupled with the fact that while the house was solid, the adjoining neighborhoods are a bit run down, although the street itself was beautiful and had historical charm. Add to that, I discovered that several years ago, a large nearby manufacturing company violated environmental laws which resulted in polluting of the nearby river and land. This property is within that circle of pollution. I decided not to make an offer and will keep exploring my options.

Thank you both for the thoughtful replies!

This is so funny. If you look at H40, you see 2 yang lines and 4 yin lines. Lines 2 and 4 are yang and look like a railroad in the hexagram. These are also the moving lines that move from yang to yin, from visible to invisible (yin is seen as dark and invisible). The related hexagram is 2, twice trigram Earth. I can't make this out from your description, but at the end of the street where the rails run is there a piece of land, or is that where the building ends?
Of course, this is in hindsight, but as I see it, the oracle in an image had already let you know the situation regarding the house.

It certainly helped you to 'be dynamic in your approach and attitude' and in so doing finding what is 'right for you'.

Good Luck

Interesting example of 2 as the second hexagram. While 2 as the first hexagram often is interpreted to mean a fertile field leading to what ever the 2nd hex is, as the second hexagram I’ve found 2 to mean a barren field or a feeling that once the first hexagram is fulfilled then nothing more comes of the situation. Before reading your decision to not put anymore energy into the possibility I was thinking this answer meant that while purchasing this new property would fulfill your desire to be released from the old life, but that would be it. It didn’t seem to offer any particular benefits for starting a new one.
