Hi, another penny for your thoughts,
I got the idea that 22 is about some sort of preparation for a journey or undertaking of some kind, pleasant one, hopefully (generally speaking).
But in order to do so, one must abandon the vehicle of old idea, conception or dream and start anew -
with new steps, new shoes are appropriate...as they can alter your stride as well.
Gotten so far with it

Siu on 22.1

22 - Public Image
THE PI HEXAGRAM

At the outset, the man is tempted to create a falsely flattering public image for himself. A simple demeanor is more gracious and fitting to his position.

Aunt Alicia slipped the large square-cut emerald on one of her thin fingers and was lost in silence."Do you see," she said in hushed voice, "that almost blue flame darting about in the depths of the green light? Only the most beautiful emeralds contain that miracle of elusive blue."
"Who gave it to you, Aunt?" Gilberte dared to ask. "A king," said Aunt Alicia simply. "A great king?"
"No. A little one. Great kings do not give very fine stones."
"Why not?" For a fleeting moment, Aunt Alicia proffered a glimpse of her tiny white teeth.
"If you want my opinion, it's because they don't want to. Between ourselves, the little ones don't either."
"Then who does give great big stones?"
"Who? The shy. The proud, too. And the bounders, because they think that to give a monster jewel is a sign of good breeding. Sometimes a woman does, to humiliate a man...."

Interesting, and you seem to be hinting at something...sadly, I am too stressed to function on this level...
but all in all, this is not about beautifying, but rather about taking more modest approach?

Yes, Dragona, I am hinting. I think your life would be less stressful if you weren't so worried about what others think of you. The story by Colette is about a family that values possessions (beautiful things) and the public impression they make more than they value life itself.

I don't know how relevant to your situation this will seem dragona, but your thread made me think of a talk I had today with a colleague. He was telling me how he had woken up very early, at about 5.30', before anyone else in his household and, since he was awake, he got himself busy with turning a batch of fresh strawberries into jam. He commented how, even after several hours had passed, his hands still smelled of strawberry - I said to him that that, could just as well be, the scent of happiness . .

:bows:

(great quotation btw, Tom, hadn't read that before)

Everything is relevant, you speak of making jam, I am thinking of making something today also to make me...well, look good LOL Tom, my stress is partially derived from trying to meet too many demands so it backfires.
I have gotten 22.1. once for somebody I could not figure out and I hope that is not the only interpretation to this line, is it?
Because if it is so...then I will spend quite some time making falsely flattering public image for myself.
Talk about exhausting....

All the things which give a sense of authority, titles, position, status, sense of worth: are stepped out of. Free from the constraints, self-imposed or accepted from others, one is free to be transparent.

Transparent as in only and truly you as you are, socially or otherwise.

Due to the overly and dubiously used word, ego, it seems too simplistic to say, leave ones ego, which carries you around like a carriage. It may be an official title, a self-image, anything which is added to cover or enhance the appearance of yourself, is left behind, and you walk in your true, un-embellished nature. The nature of transparency is expressed in line 6 - clear light.

Now that seems contrary to Tom`s explanation :mischief:
as in (socially)invisible?

Dear Dragona, you will never be invisible. Indeed, I am waiting for you to undertake the creative activity of which I believe you are capable. As you may remember, I wanted you to illustrate the stories of Precision Grace, but this collaboration has yet to occur, perhaps because you are both too shy to approach each other. Just recently LittleBuddha posted about the illustration of his poems and had great hopes for their reception because of the quality of illustration. Good illustration can make the difference between success and failure of literary work. Alice in Wonderland would not have been successful were it not for its wonderful illustrations. Part of your misery is your perception of the judgment of your sister, Yes? Well, your sister isn't you, and if you practice your abilities you would put her to shame, IMO.

hi again dragona,

lately I've been feeling short on words but there's another thing that comes to mind with 22.1, and that's the traditional japanese pottery kilns called anagama: big like 'mountains', made out of a series of rooms where pottery works sit according to the effects the potter wants to achieve, fired for days on end, works fired in anagama kilns are thought of as true signs of a potter's mastery . . If you feel like reading some more of the kind of thought they represent, take a look here :)

hope that makes some more sense . . generally, I think that in 22.1 the kind of beauty favored is the one that grows organically, out of traversing our lives' terrain more, rather than trying to find shortcuts to better appearances . .

oh, and here's some anagama photos:

I wanted to make evident what I meant by clear light, and found it expressed well here.

Respect old things. Experience those old things. But take the old outer shell away and create something new from it. This is the true nature of “tradition.”

-Takuo Kato, Japan, current “Living National Treasure”

Dora, my cartoon mind imagines tea pots leaving the elaborate kiln, being filled, then emptied into empty cups, which become full, which are emptied into another earthen vessel (human body), which itself is then emptied. A method of transportation emerges, in the form of a carriage. So, leaving that carriage is releasing ones form; taking the outer shell away, and traveling on ones own light feet, or wings. Perhaps another metaphor is a bird leaving their cage.

I think 22.1 can counsel to take the easiest most straight forward route, which isn't always a carriage, not if carriages are anything like buses anyway ! Most often commentaries suggest you don't rely on others or on pre existing routes/conveniences to get where you want to go but make your own sweet way. For example if it were a question on education it might suggest rather than follow a route laid down, do course a and then course b and so on you sort of make your own way through.

Often commentaries presume the carriage is convenient and less effort and its harder to walk but infact walking somewhere can be at least pretty straighforward. You aren't in control of the carriage but you in control of your feet. Your feet are slower but they can be in many ways surer than carriage riding.

I think in practise I have found as you said it can mean to let go of what you imagine the pre ordained method of travel to your goal is and take a simpler approach. An example is one time I thought I needed a specific teacher to get me towards a qualification. It was always difficult to even find a time to talk to her, it was all very complicated. When I let the idea go that the work had to be done that way I found a much simpler, quicker , easier way through with a different teacher with a much simpler approach. Think of it a bus travel, you wait for the right bus, it comes but goes a different route to what you want, you are told you need to change buses twice to get to where you want to go.....so you get off the bus, you forget buses altogether, and you walk...or cycle..life can just be less complicated to get you you where you want to go :) Also 22.1 can advise there's no need to rush and you are better to do things at your own natural pace, like walking not riding

this sounds more like capturing the bird in flight

I think this line is very much about shedding ideas on appearances to find the essence in its pure qualities - then the vehicle is shaped in a way that manifests its true capacities and strengths rather than those added to it later as embellishments or signs of evolution: the beauty of an unmade face to that of a brilliantly made up one - the difference between the gaze and the eyes
. . that's how it looks like - to me at least!)

It was a silly imagining, but how you got capturing a bird in flight from that escapes me. I guess any image is interpreted through the eyes of the beholder.

eehm?? .. but I really enjoyed following your comment! . . methinks that that internet devil has been messing up meanings again.
Fwiw I was merely alluding to clarity of understanding (hx30) with my 'capturing bird on flight' comment ;) - hope you had a good walk

cheers!

I didn't notice any internet gremlins running about?

What's funny is that I thought h30 when I examined your images, but I thought we were discussing 22.1, and so that's the direction my mind went. Hence the confusion, especially since your comment on catching the bird in a net is associated with 30.

But (d'uh) I failed to make the trigram Li connection, until now.

Hi Dragona,

I received 22.1>52 about making a connection leading to a job last year (a post I really should update) which may apply, although with less artfulness, to your question -

For me, it really just ended up being about trusting in my accomplishments to date (52), polishing up my resume and dressing up a bit (22), and going in person to see the manager where I wanted to work rather than relying on communicating only by email or counting on other individuals to put in a good word for me (22.1). The manager was looking for someone with substance over show which led to a perfect fit and my being accepted for the job.

So, what does a person of 22.1 do? Most importantly I think, they draw on their own inner resources (52), they also take reasonable care in outward appearances (22), and are willing to do the leg work required for developing personal connections (22.1).

hm! I did think I saw some of them rascals hiding between words, looking a lot like foxes :mischief:

Fire imo is a trigram that's toned down a lot in 22, seen only as a way to shine on exteriors - seen as burning inside though, gives it a more powerful meaning . . 22 is a hx I got very often when I started working with clay and kilns pretty much exemplify the process of firing.
Fire inside mountains also brings up to mind strongly images of gemstones:

I've never been one to mince words, in case you haven't noticed. I admit to errors in understanding, but I will not have my honesty insulted. If you want to go fox or demon hunting, ones own psyche is the best place to start the search.

?? . . OR, maybe you can stop believing I mean you wrong?? I wasn't referring to you as a fox btw - misunderstandings, on the other hand, seem to be a lot like them

There've been no harmful intentions here - as far as I'm concerned - so let's give this thread back to 22.1

Thanks everyone for your interpretations and opinions.
Some of them seem quite elaborate and done so on personal level so I could never have gone as far as you have with them.
More straightness is interesting point, for example, I would think that on foot one would wonder about more...

I can`t remember ever reading of this proposition, honest.
Seriously, you think I care about an opinion from such an person?
We have different sets of values and double standards are brewing to the point of ridiculous...I just want to clear out from this situation.
Living well would be the best revenge indeed.
