I understand that yin = 2 (even) and yang = 3 (odd). My question is why yang is not equal to 1, also odd. Is there an ancient numerological or mathematical reason why 1 is left out?

Hi Rdeschain

Just in case the comment could be useful

1.- In Binary secuences (there are not one traditional binary secuence, both 8), there are Heaven's numbers and Earth's numbers. In the most common known secuence (what some people say as the only binary secuence) all even number is Earth, and all odd number is Heaven. But there are other binary secuences where not always even numbers are Earth'numbers, and not every odd number is Heaven's number

This is the mayor uses of symbology of number: Heaven/Earth, rather than Yang/Yinn

2.- With the above as the basis; talking about yang/yinn as a numeric symbol:
First is the Void; then is the Unity, then is the Yinn/Yang, then is the 5 stages (called wrongly as 5 elements), then the 10000 things.
So, 0 = Void; 1 = Unity; 2/3 = Yinn/Yang

Why 2=Yinn, instead of 2=Yang? To be in acordance with the Normal-Macrocosmical Binary Secuence (the most knowed, where Heaven is odd), and making Heaven = Yang.

Best wishes
