I'm contemplating moving from one city to another (about 80 miles away), early in the New Year, and have already taken some initial steps in this direction eg. applying for jobs. It makes a lot of sense in terms of work opportunities. I have a clear career path that is only achievable by making this move, but I have family connections where I presently live that I shall have to leave behind.

If I'm understanding it correctly, the reading seems to be very positive about the move but also appears to come with a serious health warning. Not sure what to make of this - any comments or suggestions on how to interpret this reading would be appreciated.

I'm using Karcher Plain & Simple, and Hilary's I Ching. I've a few other translations handy, so please let me know what translation you're using if you comment.

I see this as something that needs to be rectified in your life and you are taking the appropriate action to do so hence H.18 "work on what has been spoiled". In my own experience and within the lines of 18 itself there are definite themes of family, heredity and correcting ancestral problems through your own actions (the archetypes of father and mother issues etc). So, there may be more to this situation than meets the eye. 18 can indeed have very deep roots related to the unconscious. Once tackled however a new expansion of awareness can be on the cards.

Line 2: Perhaps the Yi is suggesting here that you approach this carefully and with due sensitivity to your "family connections."(Feminine yin energy - "what has been spoiled by the mother.") Practice external consideration so as not to offend.

Line 3: Reiterates this point as there might be a tendency to go to extremes in your wish to uproot things and get to where you want to be. Nice and easy - cross all the t's and dot all the i's. And I think this might be in relation to your relatives more than logistical aspects related to the move. If you do this it seems like things should go without a hitch. There's no "blame" here but you have a chance to do this smoothly while pressing that red turbo button...

Line 6: As long as you remain sincere in your actions and keep that spiritual perspective at the forefront of your endeavours then I think you can take advantage of this new phase in your life. Recall, here that the family connections theme could also be present, especially from WikiWing rendering which I'll include here:

'No business with kings and lords,
Honouring what is highest is your business.'

We do have to sort out our relationships with 'parent' and authority figures of all kinds, create a working inner or outer hierarchy. (Like restoring correct relationships between the living and their ancestors.) But this isn't an end in itself - there's a higher goal.

I see the background H.2 The Receptive indicating the overall need for receptivity to questions and emotional reactions that may be brought to the surface.

And of course, others may see it from a different angle.

Anyway, should you decide to go for it, I wish you all the best.

Thanks Topal. That is very helpful. I hadn't looked at Wilhelm & it does suggest a more gentle approach. I had been developing something of a 'sod the lot of you' attitude - so you've hit the nail on the head there & I already feel my attitude softening. It's still a very complex, multi-layered situation with 'corruption' manifesting in individual behaviour & attitudes (including mine), in relationship dynamics, and from family histories. I think the best I can do is work on my own 'corruption', and seek to manage the 'corruption' of others in as gentle way as possible, in order to protect myself from it. I'd love to find that red turbo button though.
