I have been thinking about this subject on and off for a couple of years now. Here is the reading:

Change in line 2 in commentaries refers to much talk of misfortune and even evil. The is a moment of opportunity but the west misses the opportunity

Change in line 3 in commentaries refers to a lack of discipline and limitation. Legge speaks of how one will "discover her mistake after it is too late". Talk of a breaking of regulation, perhaps a descent into lawlessness. Wilhelm speaks of a sort of hedonism and people not realising that our mistakes are our own, and instead blaming others.

Change in line 5 seems to contradict the outcome of the change in line 3, this time showing the following of restraint and therefore good fortune. Perhaps this means that part of the society will remain steadfast in place amidst the wider turmoil and misfortune? Perhaps this could be some of the nations within the west that avoid the wider misfortune (Europe for example has 44 nations).

Changing to Hexagram 36: The sun falls and it's a time of relative darkness; the clarity of western civilisation is dimmed. Increased censorship. Ignorance. Brightness hiding - perhaps good people / some cultural manifestations requiring to hide themselves in order to survive. 'A man of dark nature is in a position of authority' [Wilhelm]: people with bad intentions reign in the time of ignorance. The verdict not hopeless as it suggests that the west may survive something of itself and culture and merits by maintaining its "inner light" in perseverance.

Interested to hear anyone's thoughts on this throw.

It's also known as intersectionality - it's the tendency to view society / political issues through the prism of group identity - e.g. race, gender, sexuality, class.

To add onto this, identity politics advocates view every single little societal issue through the lens of identity politics. Underlying all of that is the narrative that history is about oppressors vs oppressed. It's very shallow black and white thinking, so to speak, but some are truly obsessed with the idea... and demand that everyone must believe that particular groups are oppressed, else they're somehow part of the oppressors. A you're-either-with-us-or-against-us mentality. Very disturbing.

As for my thoughts... yeah, I can see the religious zeal of identity politics ramping up to the point where it becomes very dangerous for anyone to dare oppose the zealots. In part, it will be because the non-identity politics peoples will have not realized the dangers of letting it grow out of control to the point that it cannot be prevented from becoming an all-consuming dogma the harshly punishes anyone who commits wrong-think.

And in that case... it means that to make out of the dangerous situation safely, the masses will be forced to wear a mask of supporting identity politics, while keeping their true beliefs hidden, riding out the storm, so to speak, waiting until they can break the shackles that imprison them.

I am reminded on the Vatican during the height of their reign... no-one was allowed to have opinions different from what were allowed by the Vatican, lest they be punished in various ways.

People who hated the Vatican's cruelty necessarily had to wait, keep their light hidden, so to speak, until the opportunity presented itself for them to escape from the Vatican's control, and express themselves freely, which manifested in the form of the Enlightenment era.
