What is my next step? Answer 27.3 to 22

For some time I have been unable to find suitable work. I live in a very rural area but cannot sell my home to move away. My wife and I seem to be at cross purposes more than ever. I have lost my ability to see a clear path forward. How can I use the I ching to get out of this mess? I am not clear on what questions to ask. Any help would be appreciated.

The next step is to Let go of what you think should be nourishing you because all it does is create obstacles and hurt you and your wife, if you don't potentially you may lose what you have.

I am a bit confused. It seems you have asked a question, but is it meant to be a general question about the dissatisfactions you're feeling? Or, are you asking what the next step should be in asking a question to the I Ching? Or something else?

27.3 - 22 Depressed and feeling hopeless - Having a vision to aspire to.

I think your next best step is to do everything you can to plant a vision of success in your brain.

22. Is about friends gathered round a campfire sharing their hopes and wishes, but this sharing can lead to 23 and seeing what the Obstacles are to success. In your case it may be that the obstacle has to do with the fact you and your wife are not in sync right now. Being at odds with your wife greatly undermines your ability to manifest. Discuss this with her and find a way to nourish each other consciously. Make small plans together - like make a grocery list and go shopping together. As you experience success in small ways ("Wow, half the stuff on our list turned out to be onsite!") you will begin to attract/manifest success more consistently.

I just re-read your exact question. "How can I use the I Ching to get out of this mess?" So I want to slightly tweak my answer:
I think you are being told that when you find yourself feeling 27.3, Discouraged, you can use the I Ching to give yourself a 22. Vision of hope.
So asking questions like, "Describe my current situation so I may understand my position and recognize opportunities" could give you some direction.

Also consider making an actual written list of your blessings. When one has bee depressed for a while the unconscious seems to get stuck in negativity and starts only telling you why everything is going to pot. You have to reprogram it to tell you about the good stuff. You do this by consciously focusing on what is good right now.

I just asked “describe my current situation...and recognize opportunities as Rosada suggested. My answer was 50.4: 18...any thoughts on that.

I Ching definitely seems to be agreeing with you that your current situation is not good Looks like the "opportunity" here is to 18. work on what has been spoiled. If you study 18 on it's own, read all the lines, you may get an insight as to how to go about doing that, or you may find that by studying 18 the situation starts to evolve and improve on it's own. I associate 18 with the healing power of sleep. The image for 17. Following says the superior man goes to bed and as this leads to 18. working on what has been spoiled, so I see this as saying we heal during sleep. To fully take advantage of this I suggest you go to youtube and find some of their hypnosis videos to play before you go to bed at night. look for ones that promote healing tones. Also, by playing these before bed you and your wife will both benefit and perhaps this will open up some lines of communication.

27, Hungry Mouth, is for me about our hungers, what we want and what we need, and how we go about fulfilling our wants and needs. Line 27.3 suggests that maybe a new approach or mindset is needed: what you said about your situation - living rurally, but it limiting your options, but that you feel you can't leave ... might suggest that you need to think about this differently. I would guess there is at least one option - or even many options - but you're just not seeing them right now. As the Yi says, to continue in this way "is not a direction with merit."

22, is Adornment, which at first brings up thoughts of jewelry and 'putting on airs.' But it also includes the ideas of refinement and enhancement, not just of our appearance but of our thinking and problem-solving. One author suggests that it could include expanding one's (limited) vision, not to see farther away, but to more clearly see what is nearby, maybe what is 'right in front of your nose,' where a solution might be at hand.

Fredda’s amazing comments: I actually have already begun approaching this healing with asking for healing before sleep. I also was using a u tube sound recording a couple of weeks ago. I will return to that . Thanks.

You might also get value from checking out youtube videos on the "Sri Yantra". This is a hindu symbol made up of triangles. By simply staring at it, letting it's form be imprinted on your brain, while listening to the chanting, you exercise your ability to connected all the various parts of your brain and life. Both your memory and your clarity about the future will improve. You will enhance your ability to recognize patterns and cycles in your daily experience. Powerful stuff.

Watching and following a video on tai chi could also help. Tai chi is more than just an interesting stretching routine. By doing the recommended moves you promote your chi - your energy - to rise up through your chakras to the third eye chakra and you become more in sync with the life force around you. You'll notice it's effects after just one session.

Looking into Feng Shui may give you some useful tips for improving your finances. Fish, fountains and pictures of water are particularly associated with attracting money.
