what on earth to make of 11.1??

Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone has any experience of hexagram 11.1 when it comes to relationship readings..

I find the rest of the lines are pretty self explanatory but this is a particularly obscure line to understand..what's with the grass and the sod? 'undertakings bring good fortune'??

I also found the wilhem translation of the same line completely dumbfounding..Help please!

you are in the position of influence, so start something/undertake something

Each according to his kind.

those you influence with your actions will be in to it because they are like minded or moving in a similar direction as you.

Undertakings bring good fortune.

In terms of relationships, well you have to put your question up, but to me it seems like two people hwo have met and they resonate and one has to make the first move, and if this is your reading then that would be you. but then again this could be about a relationship you are in, could even be abotu a break up...whatever the senario the action that needs taking you need to take it and your partner will not resist, because it will be accordingly to their nature too.

speaks of this line as consolidation, doing something to seal the deal maybe?
I dont agree with all the translations on that site but its still an interesting and free I Ching for relationships.

11.1 speaks of interconnection below the surface. I've always felt this is a beautiful image for a relationship.

The image of the grass being entangled deep below the ground is symbolic of an interconnectedness that runs deep. If you pull up one portion of the grass, it will unearth the others since they are all tied to each other. You cannot separate them easily.

Like birds of a feather or as Forrest Gump described his relationship with Jenny, "We was like peas and carrots".

As far as relationship divination goes, the way I have interpreted this line is simply that all the people involved in the question are pretty much in agreement or will be affected by what is going on.

Key is to keep the gauge the response with the reality of your relationship and keep it in that perspective.

That has definitely shed some light on the line's possible meanings. The question was weather or not someone's feelings were truthful when he expressed them to me in the past, seeing as we are now separated and a very difficult situation makes it difficult to get in touch, which has led to all sorts of misunderstandings.

It' interesting ching ching when You mention about the need for me to make a first move.
In the context of this particular relationship, the guy has sort of put me in a position to always take the lead and I didn't feel very comfortable with it. I think we're both a bit insecure due to circumstances, and I took it as him not being entirely sure about plunging into it.

I drew this line in the context of 11>7, so with also line 3 changing, a pretty self explanatory line, seeing as we;ve had some unbelievable ups and down on this relationships (now it's definitely a 'slope' time).

Not sure if the resulting hex can change the meaning or context of lines, particularly 1?

If this were my reading, I would see it as saying:

Line 1: Two people who share a strong connection
Line 3: The relationship, despite being a good one, has it ups and downs. That's life. It happens from time to time and it's alright.

Hex 7: Marching in line in agreement. Hex 7 also refers to a sharing of a common goal and organizing your inner strength to take action. Not necessarily direct action but it does have an air of strategy to it.

Perhaps give him a bit of time to contact you but do not give up hope. I think things will be okay.

so really the question was, was he telling the truth about his feelings. Maybe 7 is a context here, a militia of mental energy that a mature person can make use of, and your personal reflection on what's been going on would support that.

11.1, all of what everyone has said above still applies with 7 as relating hex. Bringing it altogether as a whole though I get the impression the reading is saying, actually if you go ahead and tackle this you will get to the root of it, with all its entanglements, as easy as pulling up ribbon grass which brings the roots with it. (not like ivy where you have to dig and dig for those roots all day...and if you are allergic you end up with horribly itchy welts that scar for what seems like forever).

Then in 11.3 as you said above is self explainatory to you and its like a line of reassurance, the wheel keeps spinning... sometimes its up sometimes its down, enjoy the good you still have even in a slope time.

the image of 7 also has a resonance to 11.1:

In the centre of the earth is a stream. The Army.
Noble one accepts the ordinary people to gather together crowds.

But instead of the meaning of 11.1 it points at gathering your energies together under one clear vision.

and the judgement of 7 says to me that in this senario the mature person chooses constancy over ambivalence.

Now I dont see the I Ching as being able to tell you what other people are thinking, so IMO this reading is about you, and again in 7 a call for a leader is echoed.

This is also my way of looking at things, so take from it what you will, if you have attracted someone into your life that puts you in the position of taking intiative perhaps a part of you that can easily take iniative is dying to come out. Relationships are a way us humans can get at part of ourselves that would otherwise stay dormant or hidden. So you can look at this as a time of opportunity. And in that way you'd be doing 11.3.

What interesting insights. It never ceases to amaze me the way the iching can reply with such accuracy it reaches parts of the unconscious I either couldn't reach or was flat out trying to avoid..

A while ago, when I decided to distance myself because of this person's painful indecision, I asked if there was any love or positive connection I could hang on to here, in order to build something in the future and got 21 unchanging (hard work, possible reward??). 21 has been a constant in this situation. I drew 21.4 when I more recently asked should I just let go completely, and 21.6 when I asked why is he feels so conflicted about us.
So i guess in light of all the readings I could take it that there is a deep connection there (11), but it requires careful action (7), hard work and the possibility of a reward (21), but also of breaking one's teeth in the process?
Does that make sense??
