Hilary I seem to have Tohpol's guest messages at the bottom of the page under the list of forums. So there's a bunch of users from 2016 thanking Tohpol and chatting. Why can I see Tohpol's visitor page from 2016 ?
Here it is below

Dear Topal, thank you so much for taking the time to answer my question about Hex 2 (travelling or staying with my husband). All the best for you! :)

Also tried to message you but had to 'start a conversation' is that the same as PM but with added features ? Or is PM still there somewhere ?

Perhaps the new forum believes me to be Tohpol. I'm flattered but what happened to Trojina ? Maybe Tohpol is me now ?

Those are just the latest profile messages, ie messages posted to people's profiles. These have always been public, it's just that in our previous incarnation they were hidden in such an obscure corner no-one ever knew they were there. Hence 'latest' means '2016'.

I was quite glad of the list when the migration was first done, though, because it brought up a whole string of posts about medical supplies, real estate and diet plans - ie a whole ream of forum spam I'd never noticed. I deleted that lot before we moved.

I could probably remove the 'latest visitor posts' widget too, if I set my mind to it. But let's see if it inspires people to use their profiles first. (Which reminds me, I was going to update mine...)

I guess the 'like' is instead of 'thanks' button but thanks

I replied to that with a like and it hasn't 'held' will try again. I was saying how the flower for 'thanks' is so small that's why we thought there was no flower. I also said I thought you must be tired and that the 'thanks' stuff didn't really matter though you said new thanks stuff would depoliticize posting but that would be because none of the thanks are serious.

I don't understand this 'following' stuff. I was informed I was 'following' one person which I never indicated in any way so I unfollowed her only to find I'm now apparently following someone else I've never indicated I'm following. I know there's all this kind of stuff on Facebook where 'unfollowing' is some kind of snub but I don't know what following involves and haven't followed anyone. Is this in one of the videos ?

Following is like 'friends' in vBulletin, but simpler: it's one-way, no reciprocity required. (I don't know how well or logically 'friends' will have imported into 'following' - if you're seeing unexpected things now, it's probably because the import was confused.)

You can 'follow' someone by clicking on their username next to a post and choosing 'follow'. There are basically two reasons to do this:
  1. You can then see their posts in your own custom 'news feed' (find it via the 'latest posts' link in the main Community menu).
  2. You can use this as an option on the 'privacy' page (find this via 'forum settings' in the main Community menu). For instance, you might only want to allow certain people to start a private conversation with you, so you would 'follow' those people and then set that option to 'people you follow'.

Thanks, it's becoming a little clearer. I had no idea the 'friends' thing on the old forum had anything to do with following, I didn't really understand it.
