Why does this person keep coming back to me? 48.2.3.5 > 2

There is a guy who I met 8 years ago. There was a strong attraction but nothing ever happened between us and he disappeared from my life. Three years later, we had mutual friends in common who played in a band together and I saw him again for another year. We became friends and consummated the relation. A few months later, he disappeared again. Now I have not seen him for 3 years when he showed up in my gym (the place where we originally met). My question was why does he keep appearing and reappearing? I'm not sure if the response is saying that it's coincidental or that he comes back to me because he sees me as someone he can rely on? Any ideas on this one would be greatly appreciated!
