After my very heavy and emotional posts (and real-life days), wanted to share this:

I decided to back off the Yi a bit, at least for "big" questions, at least for a few days.
Of course my mind is still set on that subject... but I won't ask anything too substancial.

Anyway, I'm watching my favourite series (which my husband recorded and arranged for me) and I'm missing a few episodes. I thought of sending a casual and friendly text about that. I feel that I have to be able to keep our communications (that are very sparse) "relaxed".

So I asked the Yi:
What do you think about sending a casual, light and funny text message to X?
31.5 >62
:) Influence through small things.

So straight-forward and simple.
It made my day. I'm not asking anything else today.

Yeah, I'd be encouraged by this reading too concerning the relationship thingy.

I've never found line 5 to be comforting, though. At least not at first. Actually, most often it was accompanied by tense neck and shoulders. It actually gave me a different spin on how those years of acute neck pain may have been telling me something that wasn't getting through. Now, knock on dragon horns, it's seriously better, since I had to listen to that message until it sunk in: "let go." and I believe it continues, "and let God."

Here's a thought. If God could be persuaded through earnest petition to change the course of the Dao on your behalf, would you be better off for it?

Hi Meng, thanks for your reply!

In all honesty, I was excited not so much about the "positive" outlook of the answer, but on how well it reflected my question.
You know how sometimes you have to dig through an hexagram to understand how it relates you your question... I just loved that this was plain and simple, at least as far as I understand it.

I'm sorry to hear about your neck pain. Necks are all about building and accumulating tension, aren't they? However, I did not interpret this one as literally.

About God... Well I guess it also has to do with the discussion going on about the future being fixed or not (or how much of it is fixed and how much is flexible and malleable). I believe God wouldn't grant you a "change of path" if it was altogether bad for you. But I guess praying (or using the Yi, for that matter) wouldn't make any sense if you thought there's nothing that could be changed.

It's funny you mention that, I used to have strong feelings about God and this relationship. Not so sure anymore ;)

Best,

Flor.

Hi Flor,

Yes, I had the same impression of your reading.

My question is rhetorical. It's something I ask myself when I want something badly but don't get it, and find myself trying to persuade the powers for it. I think it travels along the same vein as "It is true that if we cannot be influenced ourselves, we can't influence the out-side world." WB 31.5

Tuck Chang's take on H.31 might interest you. He associates the lines with flirting, teasing, necking.
