I just came across a post on someone’s Facebook stating that it is common knowledge in China that “standard” people consulting (meaning common people, people with no deep knowledge of the I Ching) will in fact put their life at risk - especially if consulting for themselves.

This person studies Chinese and has contacts with China (don’t know if for studies or work) so knows about the culture and seemed to address some of her friends in a very spinstery way: “Keep doing that, and you will live less!”.

She actyally wrote: I don’t care but bear in mind you are shortening your life.

I perceived some notes of happiness about that and of not wanting people to use the book.

Of course I replied, and expect a ban from her.
Couldn’t care less, couldn’t care less, couldn’t care less!

Logically, even the most advances masters in Asia now, started without knowing anything about all this at some point. Were they shortening their lives before they gathered enough knowledge to be considered "not common"...

Of course they were, every second we are shortening our lives, part of human existence for good or bad.So yea, using the Yi Jing will shorten our lives, same as breathing will.

'Spinstery' ? A spinster is a word for unmarried women and unfortunately has gathered very negative connotations To use it in a derogatory way like this is really sexist. Technically both you and I are 'spinsters' so how do you mean 'spinstery' - do you mean like you or me or any other unmarried women on this forum ?

I wonder what she means ? Death by a copy of Wilhelm falling from a great height and causing concussion ? Also I wonder why she thinks 'standard' people can't have a deep knowledge of the I Ching. Come to that I wonder what she thinks a 'standard person' is and I wonder if she thinks she is one ?

Well you are shortening your quality of life by using Facebook and meeting people like her.

Of course I replied, and expect a ban from her.

Ban ? You mean she has a forum ? Tell me so I can become a member - it will be such fun  I want to sign up now - Oh I guess you have to be in Facebook and I won't use Facebook

Your sister in spinsterhood
Reclaiming the word and subverting it

but why would you use it ?

I guess you won't be with us much longer then Olga, if each cast you have ever done shortens your life I think you are living on borrowed time - in fact how come I am still alive aged 58 when my first actual cast I was when I was 13 or 14 - or maybe even 12.

I am told I look young for my age - but maybe all my internal organs are packing up and I just don't know it yet.

Ah well I suppose I have had a good innings.

It is odd how a man can be called a bachelor into his old age.

Shall we start using Bachelorette?

No that would be simply a diminutive of bachelor. Of course 'bachelor' has a whole host of different connotations. No one says 'he addressed some of his friends in a bachelorish way'....although to be honest I've never heard 'she addresses her friends in a spinsterish way' either - it's just not something people would say not since the 1960s perhaps - it's so sexist, it's so full of scorn - uggh a woman who isn't married must be 'spinsterish' lots of ugly insinuations about what she is....yuk. A bachelor ? oh he's just a guy who is fancy free.

Neither word is commonly used in modern day English anyway especially not 'spinster' so I wondered why Olga would use this word in this context especially as she is a 'spinster' herself , so am I so are many other women here if the definition is simply 'not married'

How does this describe unmarried women

so knows about the culture and seemed to address some of her friends in a very spinstery way: “Keep doing that, and you will live less!”.

Why would unmarried women, of which you and I are , say such things as 'keep doing that and you will live less !'.

Makes no sense. Let's use the term bachelor in the sentence

'...seemed to address some of her friends in a very bacherolish way. "Keep doing that and you will live less"

Are you still a 'spinster' if you have had long term live in relationships with men and have had plenty of sex ?

I'm so curious what 'spinsterish' is and who qualifies for the title ? Do you have to be a virgin to be 'spinsterish' ? Who uses that word and why ?

How can you be so sure I did not marry in the meantime? :mischief:

Anyway I used spinster in its traditional meaning of unsatisfied and complaining fussy woman which has nothing to do with being married or having sex. I know several married spinsters :)

The male equivalent could be old fart perhaps?
