Would you agree that Yi is a good tool to understand your dreams while you sleep?
Any experience?

I think you should try it out: ask the Yi about a dream you had and see what the response is. I've done this a few times, even when I didn't remember some (or even most ) of the dream I had.

Go for it.

Yes agreed it's worked for me. Putting this thread in Open Space would be better because it's not a reading. Admin will probably sort that. :)

I dont know if I agree.

If you are talking more generally about doing this, or how to ask the Yi about dreams, then that would go in Exploring Divination

But if want to actually do a reading about a dream, then that would go here, assuming you want to share it, get feedback, comments, etc. about your reading.

It is no different and no less real than many other things people ask the Yi about.

So funny, I just woke up from a dream and read on it. (not something I’ve done a lot so I don’t have any comments on the practice yet.) Then opened this and the first two threads are this questions and the same hex I received! (Different line). :))

Do you mean you opened this thread AND other threads, AND in those other threads you found the same Hex? I assume this is the case, since there are no hexagrams in this thread, unless they are dream hexagrams and I'm not seeing them?

I have done 'dream readings' a few times, even where I did not remember the dream - or only remembered small parts of it. The readings always are useful and informative, even if I can't confirm that that are 'about' what the dream was 'about'.

It appears to me that HarryK is asking others to share their readings so I'm calling for it to stay in Shared Readings. Hilary can make the final call when she returns.

this forum is for shared readings. he hasn't got a reading so it doesn't belong here

if he wants other's experiences then Exploring Divination or Open Space is the right place for this thread

Unless you just made up a new random rule ?

In what forum does HarryK's post belong in?
6.2.5 - 35

6.2 Cannot master this argument.
6.5 Let Hilary handle it.
35. Everything is visible.

As this forum is probably more noticed than Open Space I'm betting 35. means it belongs here.

Yes, the top two posts in Shared Readings were thing one and another on Hex 12. Different lines but still, the Hex I received when asking about my dream :)

Personally I've had pretty anemic experiences with anything to do with dream interpretation, but I think a lot of people here do quite well with it.

I just tried using forum search in the following way to see what's in the public forums. (Forum search is in the site menu at the top of the page under "Community," then the "Search" column.)
- Keyword: "dream"
- Check the box called "Search titles only" (to try to eliminate false positives where people casually mention the word "dream" in a post but the thread/post isn't really about that - you could try not checking it and see what happens)
- Scroll down to the "Search in forums" section
- Click on whatever forum(s) you want to search. To select more than one at once, hold down the Ctrl key on your keyboard while making your 2nd, 3rd, etc. selections. I selected "Shared Readings" and "Exploring Divination."
- Click the big "Search" button at the bottom

It came back with results!
So you might find interesting things in it.

Not particularly in my own experience. I mean occasionally a Yi reading has 'lit up' a dream for me, illuminated it, made me see more in it than I'd thought of. Mostly of course it's going to give you more to think about, you've got a reading and a dream now to interpret and that may be interesting although not always especially helpful.

It's definitely worth a go so why not try it and see how it works for you.

However come to think of it I find the dream tells me more about the Yi reading, the line or whatever, than the Yi tells me about the dream. That is I have definitely had dreams where I felt a hexagram or change line gained a new dimension for me from the dream.

This can happen with waking consciousness experiences too.

For example last week I found myself sitting at one end very narrow lane in a small town. I sat and just observed what was around me. There were 2 young girls playing on e scooters in the the alley way. They were maybe about 12 or 13. At first I thought they were just passing then I saw that they were centred in that space, it was where they were staying to play at going up and down and up and down the narrow lane. Then I noticed one of the girl's was going in and out of a restaurant. Then I noticed she was calling out to her parents to ask if they wanted her friend to come and help with the service. I could hear the mother say no it was okay. Then I smelled food cooking, saw some customers walking away with a takeaway. Then I saw the father come out into the alley looking like he was just popping out for air and to chat to his daughter and from all this I realised I had, simply by staying still in this spot, gained insight into a little story that I otherwise would have missed if I had not just been sitting.

Of course it all made me think o f 38.2, from wiki, Hilary's translation

'Meeting a lord in a narrow street.
Not a mistake.'

I wondered about 38, viewpoints, angles of seeing and I wondered about the meeting in the lane I had witnessed and what it showed me. If you sit at the end of a narrow lane you will see all kinds of slices of life happening there, fragments of stories of other people's lives. No big conclusion from that except to say perhaps waking experiences can be just as open to interpretation as dreams really. I think the author Robert Moss said that though I have not read his books.

You could maybe play with doing a cast just where you are when you are out and about. Snapshots of consciousness or situations which is not far from what dreams are. Or you could just notice what hexagram or line a situation looks like. This was an archetypal narrow lane just like I imagine the lane in 38.2 so I thought of 38.2

Example of using the Yi to understand a dream:

In my dream, I'm at home, at night, and I hear something outside. I go to my front door and it's ajar and the porch light is off, so it's dark outside. I turn on the porch light and I see someone I used to work with and his wife in my front yard. They look at me (perhaps in a friendly way) and then they leave ....

Yi's response: 29.1 > 60 'Pit' to 'Juncture' (trans. Richard Rutt)

Hex. 29: this dream is about my fear of being exposed (the front door ajar) and perhaps a primal (or ancient) fear of the dark: winter's darkness and no home fires (porch light) buring ....

In my dream I was (or felt as if I was) in a 'pit within a pit' (line 29.1). But ... further along in my dream, when I turn on the porch light, I can see it's just two people I know, and not some imagined fearful thing at my door.

I imagine this as a Journey:

Starting out in a fearful place, an Abyss (Hex. 29): fear, darkness, the unknow. This leads to a 'the Juncture' (Hex. 60) - where moving and still waters meet. And if I am willing to complete this journey and follow my dream to its end: I started out in fear of 'what's out there' but I ended up at the Joyous Lake (60's lower trigram).

And ... a day or so before I had this dream, I heard something out in my front yard; I went to my front door - which was ajar - and I saw two deer near my porch. I closed my door, not out of fear of the deer, but so I could watch them without disturbing them ....

This feels like a similar journey to my dream's: I started out afraid or maybe a bit leary of 'what's out there', but when I looked, it was just two (joyful, friendly, magical) deer in my yard!

Best, D

Really interesting thread. I never tried to cast a hexagram about a dream, but I recently dreamed that I had a well in my yard. I was with my best friend and I noticed that dirty, red water (as if there was blood in it) would come out of it. Then after letting all those dirty water come out, the water became crystal clear once again, and my friend happily drank it and ate some mushrooms which were laying on it. I thought it could be related to the hexagram 48 and that it had to do something about my relationship. In fact this is the hexagram that I seem to get frequently regarding my love life. I got it as a second hexagram when I broke up with my ex some years ago. I didn't know what that meant, but after a year I got it again as a first hexagram with a line telling that the water was clear, but it was not being used and that was a shame. After a few months I took part in a shamanic ritual where you would ask the stars to bring you a vision about love. The well came out again, I told the shaman who also studied I Ching and told me it was a good omen, that were was a good opportunity waiting for me. There was a girl which I was interested in, I asked I Ching and I got the well, unchanging! The girl was already in a relationship and I felt what it meant is that the right one wasn't there yet, but that I would soon find her. In fact I barely knew her and it was only a shallow interest, only then I realized the well could refer to an old acquaintance. After a couple of months I reunited with an old friend, who was also my ex girlfriend's (the one for which I got the well as a second hexagram when we broke up) best friend. She came back to my hometown because of the first lockdown. We've been together since last summer. I had a crush on her when we were teenagers but I never really told her, we lost contact every once in a while etc. So that was the water not being used, I suppose.

The dream was probably about a huge fight (you might have read about it in the shared reading section) that we had. I was afraid that we would have broken up but in fact we haven't and the water is becoming clear again.
