Ditto on:
"The hexagram asks you to consider: what are you following? A person ? or the Tao (the way)?
If both of you follow the Tao, you will prosper.
But if you try to pursue him, with a narrow focus and in a way like trying to "catch" him, or his feelings, then it will backfire."
Be sure to follow (17) your own "lodestar" (17.5), not tied up in an intention to make a "catch" (17.4). Always return to yourself and your own path, or Tao (24). You will never lose that which is truly yours, and you will never be led astray. If you two are meant to be together, the universe will conspire to bring you together and keep you together, granted that you (both) still have your (inner) sight fixed on following your lodestar and if it is "written in the stars."
Keep in mind that a lodestar is,
"a star that is used to guide the course of a ship, especially Polaris."
Such a star is a fixed constellation around which to center your life. It does not move. It revolves around the earth with the seasons.
The appearance of 17.4 means there is either a struggle or choice to maintain adherence to the will of the true self or the will of the ego. The ego seeks to follow "satellites," which are not fixed constellations, but ever-changing in desire and influence. They exist without a center and seek to make gains based on what serves their purpose and self-interest in the moment. Discard such satellites and "go one's way with sincerity" (Wilhelm/Baynes).
Decide if it is 17.4 or 17.5 you follow. Perhaps, the Yi is just reflecting your need to make a choice to follow someone or something greater?
I've written a poem about following such a "lodestar" called "Mysterious We." You might like it.
