I'm new to the I Ching concept, and I will admit I'm not sure what to make of it. But I did a casting anyway.

Right now I have a job that I'm not too enamored with. I'm 58 and finding something else based on my skills is challenging. I'm looking to retirement and considering starting a home-based biz to supplement what I have and build to the point where it could provide income to assist in retirement.

Here is the question and the results:

Should I persue a Shaklee business? and Yi's answer, 54.4 to 19

Comments would be most welcome. Here's my own interpretation as a complete newbie at this.

Hexagram 54 - Marrying Maiden.
This actually seems to describe my current employment situation.

"the ‘marrying maidens’: they are present simply to make relationships easier and have no status of their own. As a marrying maiden, you have accepted a relationship where you come second. You are only here to play a supporting role;"

That pretty much sums up role at work. Some years back I ended up on stress leave due to being unable to cope with new supervisor and the way he treated those under him. Actually, three of us ended up on stress leave. When I came back, I moved quickly to a new position that evolved into what I do now. I'm a program assistant in a college. Really, what I do is make relationships easier by handling requests from faculty and taking on tasks for them and their students. I truly do come second and I'm in a supporting role.

Line 4
‘Marrying maiden overruns the set time.
Delays and marries at the right time.’

Not sure what to make of it. Perhaps I've been here longer than I should but I'll be making a change when it's the right time?

Hexagram 19 - Nearing
This one was bit more challenging for me, but here goes.

‘Nearing.
Creating success from the source, constancy bears fruit.
Reaching an end in the eighth month means a pitfall.’

Success can come my way, but I need to be consistent. Assuming I've reached a conclusion too early on, though, will cause failure.

I find this part fascinating:

"There are two strands of meaning here: the approach of a greater spirit or presence in an ongoing process of growth, and your approach as the one who pays attention and takes responsibility."

I'm at a point in life where I'm feeling a little lost. I've been through ups and downs with religion and concluded there is no god, based largely on my love for science. But feelings of depression coming about through no passion for my job started me thinking. I'm once again looking into spiritual matters and I've contacted a person about it whom I haven't spoken with in years. It's like an ongoing process of growth. So the above quote really touches me.

The next part hit home, too.

"... if the situation demands that you produce a tangible result prematurely – then this means misfortune. Or if you focus exclusively on results instead of watching patiently over developments – if your expectations are out of touch with the pace of growth – then there is misfortune."

It's been a stumbling block for me in regards to other things I've tried. I end up expecting results too quickly. When I don't see them, I quit. I haven't shown the patience to let things grow and develop in the past. Indeed, my expectations have been out of touch with the pace of growth!

From this reading, when I interpret is I am currently stuck in a 'second' position and building a business with Shaklee could work for me, but I need to have patience and understand growth can take time.

I'd love to hear the thoughts of those with more I Ching knowledge than what I possess.

Hey Seeker57, I think you may have answered your quesiton. I like what LiSe says about line 4:

Don't do things when you 'want' or 'ought' to do them, but when those things or the time say it is the right moment. Because you will have success when it is THE right moment and not YOUR right moment.

19 implies that clearly you are onto something... but the advice not to push it, but to follow the tao in this endeavor. You asked if you should pursue a Shaklee business. Perhaps a useful line of inquiry might be to reflect on how you can pursue it in a way that is most harmonious. There also may be more to come together in the process of "nearing".

From Jim DeKorne's website, quoting Wing:
You are faced with a situation in which you must now refrain from action in order to await a more propitious time. It may appear that the world is passing you by as you wait, but your reward for maintaining your principles is on its way.
